The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s new report shows how much demand for electric vehicles (EV) has grown across the country. In this quarter alone, EV’s share of total car sales went from 7.4% to 8.9%, and sales have quadrupled over the past few years. As EVs become more accessible, utilities will need to consider the impact on energy demand and grid operations. Learn more in Utility Dive:

The utility industry has been in a low growth period for over two decades, well below 1% per year. This recent report from Grid Strategies predicts that annual peak demand growth will average 3% per year over the next five years, with growth concentrated in Texas, the Pacific Northwest, and other regions of the country. While 3% growth may seem small to some, it means we’ll need to have six times as much generation and transmission capacity from what we currently have. Check out the full report for more insights:

It goes without saying that we need to build new infrastructure to support grid modernization efforts, but these projects can be time-consuming and costly. That doesn’t mean we have to wait to push our power grid forward. In this week’s episode of the Grid Mod Pod, Aftab Khan of PJM Interconnection sat down with Elizabeth Cook, PhD to discuss how PJM is taking advantage of every possible mechanism to implement new transmission projects. Check out a sneak peek of what he had to say, and watch the full episode here: https://buff.ly/3ZoV0Zt
