We are at a pivotal moment in our industry. The family to caregiver ratio is poised to drop from 7:1 today to 3:1 in 2050. Individuals over the age of 65 will grow from 56 million (2020) to 84 million in 2050, while those over the age of 85 will grow from 7 million (2020) to 19 million in 2050. As a result, the Home Care Association of America (HCAOA) is intensely focused on this key question—how will we address the widening chasm between diminishing family caregivers and an exponential increase in the older population, as well as the other demographics served by home care, as we approach 2050? Start by implementing these 3 strategies: ☝️ The Professional Caregiver The caregiver workforce shortage has reached crisis proportions in the U.S., and the steady growth of the U.S. senior population only exacerbates the current shortage. HCAOA is working with other industry leaders to invest in caregiver training and support, to develop a viable career path to attract more people to the caregiving profession, and to explore other avenues for workforce growth; including immigration reform that would provide an avenue for qualified foreign-born individuals while attracting more qualified workers to the industry. ✌️ Technology As with most industries, home care is grappling with what impact emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) will have on how we manage our agencies, the patients and clients we serve, and the caregivers working in homes. AI can optimize the scheduling and routing of caregivers while providing data-driven decision-making that is agency-specific and aids in streamlining operations. AI can also provide real-time insights and enable agencies and caregivers in the field to make informed decisions, leading to greater client and caregiver satisfaction. 👌 Data In 2024, HCAOA will reinstate our Data and Research Committee, with a main goal of leading the charge to rigorously collect and analyze real data to demonstrate the cost savings associated with home-based care. More data will help us better understand important trends and enhance our ability to tell the story of the value of home care. This message is critical to potential caregivers, to those we serve, and to the governments who can implement policies to both bolster the workforce and increase access to care. Read the full article from the 2024 Activated Insights Benchmarking Report by Jason Lee, CEO of HCAOA, below.

According to 1,000+ providers surveyed for the 2024 Activated Insights Benchmarking Report, the top five priorities for business owners in the industry can ALL be directly linked to the impact of ✨ effective marketing. ✨ 9 marketing ideas to promote your long-term and post-acute care business: 💡 1. Talk about your business straight from your customers’ and employees’ perspective. Use customer and staff feedback to showcase real-world examples of what makes you shine that you can use on your website, company collateral, and as talking points for networking with referral sources. 💡 2. Become an educational resource or thought leader within your community. Nurture referrals with thought leadership content so that when they search, “Most commons signs of Alzheimer’s” or “Is my dad ready for home care?” they will see an educational blog article pop up from your company. 💡 3. Show don’t just tell, your company’s culture in action with pictures. If you’re hosting a training session, having a holiday party for your staff, or you get permission to take a picture of your staff in action, utilize these photos as proof that your company has real people who care. 💡 4. Implement an employee recognition program. While care professionals reported that they are most dissatisfied with employee recognition, your customers are most satisfied with the ability of your care staff. Reverse company-wide miscommunication and feelings of unappreciation by implementing a staff recognition program. 💡 5. Utilize negative reviews as an opportunity to prove your company’s problem-solving skills. Review Trackers found that 94% of consumers admit that a bad review has made them avoid a business, 45% of them are more likely to visit a business if it responds to negative reviews, and 56% said a company’s response to a review changed their overall perspective. 💡 6. Take your business out into the community. Community events provide opportunities for company visibility, establishes your brand as a service-oriented, people-first, human-to-human business, and gives community members a chance to connect face-to-face with your care professionals. 💡 7. Position your employment opportunities as a career. Communicate your belief in your staff’s potential by clearly promoting your company's advancement opportunities. 💡 8. Optimize your job postings to attract as many high-quality, long-term candidates as possible. Your job posting needs to immediately tell prospective candidates what they will get out of working for you such as your culture, the training you offer, and the role’s fulfilling purpose. 💡 9. Let third party endorsement seal the deal on all your marketing efforts. Stand out in the industry by qualifying for industry awards that differentiate you from other long-term and post-acute care companies in your area such as Best of Home Care Awards or U.S. News Best Senior Living.
