In a review of 87 studies published from 2000 to 2021, 71% demonstrated that nature-based solutions were a consistently cost-effective approach to mitigating hazards. Among these studies, 65% found that nature-based solutions are more effective in attenuating hazards than engineering-based solutions. Techniques like 'Slow it, sink it, spread it' help retain water, mitigating floods and supporting ecosystems.
One of the tenets of restoring the water cycle is "Slow it, sink it, spread it". If the water slows down, there is less runoff, and more water is left on our the continents. If we can sink the water, it helps replenish the groundwater. If water spreads (eg with the help fo beavers), it helps hydrate the landscape. Roads are an example of "Speed it, surface it, channel it" . This leads to water escaping the continent more quickly. It means water is not infiltrating to hydrate the landscape as much. And it leads to more floods, as roads channelize the water into high velocity streams. Roads are a major problem for our water cycle which not many people are talking about. #slowwater https://buff.ly/3FIRMah
