After a tough job interview, reflect on what went well and what can be improved. Use feedback as a learning tool to strengthen your interview skills. Follow up with a thank-you note, reiterating your interest and commitment. Keep the door open for future opportunities by staying in touch with the interviewer. Each interview is a chance to refine your approach, expand your network, and enhance your resilience.

In supporting my clients, many of them have interview experiences that are less than stellar. To gain experience and sharpen interviewing skills, practice is necessary. We review the experience not as a loss but as an opportunity to learn without ruminating on negatives. 1. What went well? 2. What didn't go well? 3. How can this experience help you moving forward in other interviews? 4. Do you recall what questions were asked? Being more prepared for potential questions that might be asked specific to the job interview is helpful. Having well thought out career stories that effectively articulate your value are key to moving to the next round of interviews. Confidence is a huge asset in this process from a hiring prospective.

A tough job interview is a valuable learning experience. Afterward, I reflect on the questions, identify areas for improvement, and refine my responses. I seek feedback when possible, to understand expectations better. I use the experience to sharpen my skills, strengthen my resume, and tailor my preparation for similar roles. Following up with a thoughtful thank-you email keeps me on the employer’s radar and demonstrates professionalism. By turning challenges into growth opportunities, I build confidence, enhance my capabilities, and stay focused on landing the right career opportunity.

A tough interview can be a stepping stone if approached with the right mindset. Beyond reflection, record the interview questions to refine your responses for future opportunities. Use feedback as a guide to upskill—whether it's improving technical knowledge or communication. Build relationships by connecting with the interviewer on LinkedIn and engaging with their content, demonstrating your genuine interest in their organization. Treat it as market research: what does their feedback reveal about industry expectations? Every interview is a chance to sharpen your strategy and align your goals.

Use this experience to refine your personal brand and tailor your resume to highlight relevant strengths. Additionally, maintain connections with the interviewers, as they might consider you for future opportunities. After a challenging interview, the first crucial step is to engage in a detailed reflection. Take the time to review each question and your responses, noting areas where you felt unsure or where the conversation might have veered off track. Identify specific moments where you struggled—was it a lack of technical knowledge, difficulty in communicating your ideas clearly, or nerves affecting your performance? Understanding these nuances allows you to pinpoint exactly what needs improvement. It’s also beneficial to reflect on what went well during the interview, as this can reinforce your strengths and boost your confidence.

I had a client who told me over the weekend that he had had a bad interview the day before. I suggested that he call the hiring manager and ask for another chance. He called on Monday, reinterviewed Wednesday, got the offer on Thursday, and on Friday was packing to move for his new job. Clearly that doesn't always work, but it only has to work once!

If you are facing a tough job interview, take some second to breathe and calm down. You don’t need to rush to answer the questions, and you might give the wrong answers if you do. So buy yourself some extra seconds. Drink a sip of water. It will help your body to calm down and having a dry month won’t help. If you are not sure about the question you were asked, rephrase it to the interviewer and double check if you got the question right. If you understand the question in a better way, you’ll be more capable of answering it also in the right way. When the interview is done, remember to send a “Thank you note” message to the recruiter, as this is an opportunity to mention any relevant information you forgot to mention during the interview
