You’re trying to communicate with someone who has a different perspective. How can you get through to them?

When you clearly have a way of seeing the world, that can lead to its own biases. Negotiating and understanding different points of view is extremely important to arriving at an outcome that creates the most value and impact. At times I have disagreed with a point of view but the insight I gained in the process grew me, my work and the outcomes. There are other times when my point of view has proven helpful because the people around me provided their own perspectives and unique experiences such that it’s not about me anymore. There only seems to be a way of doing things based on a host of unique circumstances that shift through time. The key is to always listen out for the best solution and not be blinkered by your own ego.

When engaging with someone of a different perspective, it's crucial to define your goal clearly—whether it's sharing information, understanding their viewpoint, or finding common ground. Start by identifying shared values and actively listening with empathy. Use "I" statements to express your thoughts without sounding accusatory, and seek common goals to shift the focus towards collaboration. Maintain a calm demeanor, be open to compromise, and steer the conversation towards future solutions rather than dwelling on past disagreements. Acknowledge the limits of changing perspectives, aiming for mutual understanding and respect even in the presence of differences.

En mi recorrido profesional he aprendido que en la mayoria de las conversaciones que sostenemos ponemos el foco en dar respuesta y explicar nuestro argumento, esto entorpece el diálogo. Necesitamos diseñar conversaciones diferentes, donde el objetivo sea genuinamente comprender al otro y no cargar su historia con lo que yo siento o pienso acerca de lo que dice. A diario ofrecemos consejos no solicitados y teñimos con nuestra historia el relato del otro. La escucha genuina es la que nos permite hospedar aquello que nuestro interlocutor siente o piensa, y si podemos acordar estar en desacuerdo con su interpretación; aún así debemos de respetarla. Hacen falta cursos de escucha-toria.

I am very proud to say that for the first time in years, I had two separate discussions with people, who I like a lot, but I was shocked at their assertions. Usually, I would have been angry. This time, I tried to understand the "why" of what they believe. I held my own with a conspiracy theorist by providing facts and challenging the assumptions of another with their internal bias. What stopped me from becoming angry, thus enabling me to discuss my point of view respectfully, was accepting that I would not convert them. The best I could do was provide an alternative opinion while respecting theirs.

Building bridges between different perspectives is crucial for a global impact. Start by finding common ground—shared goals or values. Speak their language, not just linguistically, but in terms of their priorities. Show them how your startup aligns with their vision, addressing their concerns. It's not just about convincing; it's about creating a shared vision for positive change. And remember, understanding comes before being understood.

Engaging with differing perspectives isn't about winning, but understanding. Start by identifying your goal: is it to understand, find common ground, or influence thinking? Approach the dialogue with an open mind and focus on empathetic listening. Speak their language and show genuine respect for their views. This fosters a connection where true understanding can blossom, paving the way for meaningful change. Remember, it's not just a conversation; it's a bridge to mutual understanding.

My personal goal is to stay curious, to ask open questions such as: “what do you mean by…”, “can you tell me an example when…”, “how/when did you realize that…”, and to stay respectful at all times.

Although, we need to listen and speak in a proportionate ratio, so that discussion can be built upon and mutual learning can be attained. But most importantly is the body movement including expression and movements, many a times rather mostly people during their initial years of professional career lacks the ability to communicate effectively in a guided manner, whereas the listener if notices detailed non-lingual language it will be more compassionate learning.

If there were only one thing to do to resolve conflict, it would be active, deep curious listening to understand the person's perspective. Look with steely stillness into their eyes & the separation between you & them vanishes. Your attention is the one thing you can control...freely-offer it, give it & receive it as you notice how it is affecting your conversation. Language matters-choose carefully the words you use. Make examples as plain & tangible as possible to model language that when you hear it can easily be decyphered for respectful response. Request an opening when there is a pause as you listen. Ask, "Would you like to hear a solution/idea/opportunity from me now?" Listen joyfully - it's fun! Listen for what's not said. Smile.

Understand their view. Respect that they see things differently and that their stance may be equally valid. Understand what is driving their view and what has led them to come to those conclusions. Be kind, be patient, be open and also explain your rationale. Then look to find the areas of common ground, where you can see some areas of progress towards a compromise or resolutions. Don’t allow pride to block a resolution.

In addition to listening, also observe. A lot can be learned from observing someone's work style, communication style, and management style. Some people are collaborative workers whereas others are independent workers. Meet them where they're at so you can create a space where your message and collaboration can succeed.

In the present time people focus on speaking their points rather than listening and understanding others views and perspectives. We should actively listen to other people's perspectives and facts and respond accordingly where they feel that you are trying to make them understand why specific perspectives are important and correct rather than you are trying to make them feel wrong. Understand them, provide them the information and data , and then explain why what you are saying is accurate.

Be aware of the power dynamics when you listen to others. If you are the party who has a role that naturally hold more power than the other party, i.e. if you are a manager, a funder, a parent, be very conscious of the power associated with your roles and titles as well as the potential impact on the other party when they engage in dialogue with you. To achieve active listening, you may need to proactively even out the power dynamics with the other party, sometimes as subtle as a smile, a handshake, or a short comment of encouragement to establish rapport and trust.

Active listening is the cornerstone of impactful communication. It transcends mere auditory processing and delves into the realm of empathetic engagement. True listening involves absorbing not just the words, but also the emotions, body language, and underlying values of the speaker. It's about showing genuine interest, asking questions that prompt deeper introspection, and echoing their thoughts to confirm understanding. This level of attentiveness requires a conscious effort to avoid interrupting, staying free from distractions, and suspending judgments. By mastering active listening, you create an environment of trust and rapport, fostering a deeper, empathetic connection that goes beyond the surface level of conversation.

Listen generously, ask additional questions when needed, show genuine interest, be respectful of others’ opinions and feelings… in some cases and when appropriate a little bit of humor can go a long way.

Indeed, listening does the world a lot of good. It's so essential, yet often gets overlooked. When we listen attentively, we learn, grow and understand better. There is a wide difference between listening to respond and listening to understand. In addition, when we only speak or we speak more than we listen, we only communicate what we already know! No one holds the monopoly of knowledge or ideas. Listen more to gain new and fresh perspectives.

It’s not our responsibility to “make” others understand. Our responsibility is to speak our truths and let the listeners make up their own minds. The world has a major problem with shared information.

I listen with my heart to what is being shared - for what is underneath the words. That way I am truly listening and can see what the real need/ perspective is - rather than responding and/or defending what I think.

In my experience, showing you can relate or understand another’s viewpoint is important. This is the case even if you disagree. Sometimes it makes sense to walk the conversation back from specific points you’re arguing over and bring it back to broader values. Katherine Hayhoe’s book “saving us” outlines how to do this in the context of climate change. Of course, this is easier said than done. In the heat of an argument it’s worthwhile taking a pause. Pursuing an argument will often lead to further entrenchment. Pause, reflect and try and pivot the conversation to a broader plane!

The conclusion of a dialogue does not need to be general agreement between the parties, on the contrary, respect and recognition of the diversity of thoughts and opinions.

Humility goes a long way. Finding a productive outcome from conflicting perspectives can be a very positive experience if the parties choose respect and results over ego. If you are a leader, an authoritative hard line is actually the weakest approach with the least effort put forth toward a value-add outcome. Choose to be better, and do better.

When you find your opinion in contrast to the other one stop for one moment to sit on your side of the story and try to step out from your perspective, trying to assume the other viewpoint even if you do not agree. After this exercise, you'll be sure that your opinion or the other one will be correct in the situation ongoing. Acknowledge differences for me means to assume them to completely understand them.

Acknowledging differences is key in effective communication. When facing disagreements with someone of a different perspective, don't avoid or ignore, but respectfully recognize these differences. Understand that each viewpoint is valid and valuable, even if you disagree. Show appreciation for their openness in sharing thoughts and feelings. Focus on finding common ground or areas of agreement to bridge gaps. This approach fosters mutual respect and understanding, turning potential conflict into a constructive dialogue.

I think clearly acknowledging feelings and good points is essential. For example: "I am with you on X. I'd like to add my perspective on Y. It must be scary to deal with X. I bet there is more we agree on than disagree. What do you think?"

Clear and concise communication is crucial when conversing with someone of a different perspective. Avoid jargon, slang, or acronyms that might cause confusion. Opt for simple, direct language to articulate your main points and reasoning. Back up your statements with relevant examples or evidence. Maintain a respectful and polite tone, steering clear of sarcasm, insults, or accusations. To ensure effective communication, regularly check for understanding and invite feedback from the other person. This approach not only conveys your message effectively but also demonstrates your respect for their perspective.

Não tente parecer superior usando uma linguagem rebuscada. Isso vai afastar as pessoas, alienando-as. Tenha em mente que usar uma comunicação direta, franca e didática, embora não professoral, é um caminho essencial para nivelar a conversa, e tentar desarmar os jogos de poder inerentes a qualquer relação.

Contextualize the speech, explain your point of view, particular interests and willingness to explain, clarify and respect divergence and disagreement.

This is a huge challenge, and it is often difficult to be open enough not to impose one's views on others. There are biases and sentiments across regions, countries, religions, genders, tribes and people. Often times we find that there is no one right answer. As an African proverb puts it, "there are several routes into the market place". Be open-minded!

In order to communicate someone with different perspective than yours, focus on being open minded. As one of my guru - Shri Hari haran ji stated - for you to be intellectual you need to be open minded to accept other's views and perspective. If you are not open to other people's views then no one else will listen to your voice.

Being open minded doesn’t mean to be willing to change your opinion, but to be curious about what the other person has to teach you and maybe discovering you have more in common than you initially thought.

A dialogue must generate broad and diverse learning. Listening to another should allow me to access and visit a new point of view and perception.

Embracing open-mindedness is a transformative aspect of communication. It involves the willingness to learn from others, to genuinely consider their perspectives, and, if warranted, to revise your own viewpoints. This approach requires humility, curiosity, and flexibility in your thought process. By being open-minded, you not only broaden your knowledge but also challenge your preconceived notions, opening doors to new ideas and possibilities. It's a practice that enriches conversations and leads to profound personal and professional growth.

Allow yourself to be vulnerable and incoherent sometimes. We all are human. This might help you connect and obtain the attention and appreciation of someone opposite you in an idea. Showing that you are a person just as they are can introduce you both to new perspectives and support surmounting differences.

Additionally, cultural sensitivity is crucial factor to consider when communicating with individuals from different backgrounds. Words and sentences may carry different connotations or be interpreted in various ways across cultures.

Take a pause and keep the communication open for trying out both the opinions simultaneously to see what will work in favour if such exercises have not been tried yet.Or, demonstrate proven results achieved in similar situations from the past as per your opinion; as well as that of the other person's opinion. The ideation may lead to a completely new perspective not tabled before by either of the two involved parties.

One thing I have found helpful when discussing differences is that both parties share their authentic feelings. There are times when disagreements will occur, but you leave the discussion knowing how someone truly feels. Most will be satisfied as long as you did hear their point of view.
