My experience has shown that fostering psychologically safe spaces and practicing courageous inclusion allows underrepresented voices to share their lived experiences beyond data points. It’s not enough to attend forums or single cultural events—leaders must co-create solutions with these communities, recognizing their unique barriers and fostering a sense of shared ownership. By doing so, we shift from transactional engagement to transformational, equity-driven solutions and policies that prioritize true inclusion and equitable outcomes.

Successful community input in to policy design and implementation requires authenticity, trust and respect, a shared understanding of the problem being addressed and some mutual benefit. At a practical level, engagement should be arranged at a location, date and time that suits the community rather than being driven by policymakers - this may mean meeting communities in the evenings or weekends so they don’t need to take time off work. Consideration should also be given to an appropriate token of recognition for their contributions (monetary or other). Finally it is important once a relationship is formed to continue engagement and provide regular updates. Deepening the relationship demonstrating it wasn’t a tick box exercise.
