These steps are just the beginning stage of establishing trust, boundaries, and expectations during the initial remote onboarding process.

Virtual check-ins, and a set schedule the first week. A schedule provides a stable framework and helps ensure that folks don't get lost in the process. Provide a guide to links, important terms and internal groups. Ask them to compile a list of names, positions and faces so they get familiar with the organization. Meet near the end of each day that first week. Circle back in the months ahead and ask these questions- 1) What's something that surprises you? 2) What's something you've learned? 3) What's something you're hazy on? Listen closely to help improve the process for the next time. Note their answers and use them in an end of year review to highlight their growth!

One thing that I’ve found helpful is ensuring that check ins are on camera. Even if your organization doesn’t do many video meetings (my company didn’t for a long time), find a way to make it happen. Eye contact, body language and confirming all parties aren’t multitasking are major benefits of video meetings with new employees. If there’s also the ability to share screens, that helps with onboarding and training to show systems and how to actually do the work expected of them. Hands on one-on-one training makes a huge difference with onboarding and retention of talent you worked so hard to find!

One thing I’ve found and I’m finding helpful is making great use of scheduling 1:1 time to ensure a smooth transition. Additionally it’s important to allow space for mistakes. The expectation of perfection isn’t realistic and while onboarding new team members it can be helpful to remove the thought that the expectation is of that person or persons to be perfect. Ensuring that there’s an open conduit of communication which builds trust is imperative.
