Do not impose, but align. Many consultants fail because they impose what they believe and what they have on the client. Rather, understand them, empathise, identify the problems and create problem statements, study the environment, use the enablers and do what is needed for them to resolve their problems than to satisfy your ego and needs. Never work to tick a check in the box though the client may initially tend to focus on it. Understand, be with them on their issues, evaluate, analyse, present your views based on facts and figures. Express opinions affirmatively based on knowledge and logic. Demonstrate benefits of doing something in some definite fashion you propose. Give them the right perspective based on the knowledge that you have.

To build trust with a new client: listen carefully, be honest about your abilities, show professionalism, share relevant experience, and deliver quick wins to prove your value. Consistency and clear communication are key.

"Trust is earned, not given." – At StrategyWerks, we always believe in delivering on our promises, no matter how big or small. From day one, I focus on being authentic and consistent. Transparency is key, but so is follow-through. I also ensure that we’re not just talking at clients, but truly listening to their pain points, adapting our approach to solve their unique challenges. My top tip? “Under-promise, over-deliver.” Let’s make sure every step we take together exceeds expectations.
-
1. Be Transparent: From the start, be open about what you can deliver and any potential challenges. Honesty builds a strong foundation. 2. Listen Actively: Show genuine interest in their needs and concerns. Listening more than you speak helps you understand their perspective and shows you value their input. 3. Deliver Early Wins: Identify quick, impactful actions you can take to demonstrate your commitment and capability. Early successes build confidence and trust.

Ah yes -- this old chestnut. Be human. Get to know the people. Ask questions. Easy to fall back on process and protocol and talk about the what and why. Bottom line - as a consultant - you are on someone else's turf, often by senior invitation, rarely by workforce permission. I've seen many a consultant mess up first impressions by failing to take the time to connect. Relationships first. Understand where you fit in. Take time to get clear on perceptions. Listen vs tell...could go on!

Actively listening to the client requirements helps understand the scenario better. Take your time in understanding the ask from the client and then analyse on what can be delivered. Explain the client about the product and its capabilities. This helps in identifying if the exact requirements from the client can be met or not. This also helps in gaining trust with the client regarding your knowledge on the solution.
