Ideally your alignment should be clear at the beginning of the partner relationship. Honesty is always the best policy. If the relationship changes due to business decisions at your organization or the partner organization it is critical that you have built personal relationships where you can have an open and honest conversation about the status and future of the relationship. I think too often we try to "fit a square peg in a round hole" and that leads to dissatisfaction on both sides of the relationship, with the resulting disappointing business outcomes. As many others have said here, communication and relationships are key.
