(edited)Partnerships work because you find actual symbiosis. So if you're resuscitating a dormant opportunity to work together, the best route is to be clear, concise, and focused fully on the benefit to the potential partner. The reciprocity will come in time if the partnership makes sense, but just like in sales, speaking only of the benefit to you won't move the needle.

Building a partnership from scratch definitely takes time and patience. If something urgent comes up, I prefer to team up with a supervisor or find a mutual connection who can help set up a meeting. When I reach out, I make sure to communicate openly about the goals of the partnership while keeping the tone friendly and relaxed. After our initial contact, I like to stay in touch with simple, regular updates, making sure not to push too hard at the beginning. I also enjoy checking in on how they’re doing before jumping into business—it shows I genuinely care about them as individuals. This thoughtful approach helps build trust and encourages open, productive conversations as we work together.

In a situation like this, actions speaks louder than words. Partners that are guarded are usually like this as they have been shortchanged in the past. Recognize this as your chance to right some wrongs and become a pain reliever in their work life. Pitch and be forward with what you can deliver: - Show them how you have delivered on these promises WITH historical evidence - Give them an idea of how your service/product fits into their stack and how you plan on supporting that workflow on ALL levels. Its about proving to them you can walk the talk more than anything. You cant force trust, all we can do is show our partners we are trustworthy actors and count on them seeing that.

Transparency and overcommunicating are key to building trust in a partnership. Aligning goals and defining metrics for success are crucial steps in any partnership, and if the history of a partnership is murky from the jump, the outcome and process will be difficult. Communicators and project managers can course-correct by overcommunicating. Setting regular status meetings, circulating materials, defining OKRs together, and establishing touchpoints for connection will help build trust and foster transparency.

Set all that you have heard aside, do not make assumptions, do not make judgments. Re-break the ice and provide a safe space for everyone to feel comfortable sharing their concerns. Being uncommunicative can have a million reason, do not make assumptions.
