Oh this is a good one! If timelines are squishy, then make them up but do it in a way that’s most convenient for you and your team! Then make sure to make your stakeholders and partners aware of the dates you came up with. Don’t forget to include some justification! If you get pushback, then you can renegotiate and get real about deadlines. It’s amazing what happens when you tell someone when you’re going to have something done if they don’t give you a date.

Great thoughts already shared here! I agree that transparency is key--with your team, customers, and key stakeholders. I also like Wendy K.'s proactive stance--using what you know, create a WIP timeline and share it with the groups listed above for feedback, if you can. My natural inclination is towards optimism and aggressive timelines, so I have to remind myself to take my original estimates and make them more conservative so I set myself and my team up for success!
