In my role as n architect, especially in the context where I work (Nigeria), managing client's expectations of the process is really important. I keep all my communication lines open, stewarding the planning application through all the stages to completion, resolving issues as they are raised. I also ensure that all other processes that will ensure that the project doesn't stall are being executed. I prioritise processes like site preparation, detailed construction documentation, material procurement among others are such that won't be in violation of the planning approval process. This way, I keep all the stakeholders in the project satisfied through the sometimes stressful process.

In my perspective there are 3 things to do to avoid zoning approval delays. 1- It is about playing safe. Simple and minimalist design approach always keeps you away from this kind of problems. 2- Deep designing every single part of your project. Most architectural offices solve unsolved problems in the construction site which leads to this kind of delays. 3- Keep in touch with the local approval authorities. Discuss every detail with them before the problem appears. Most of the time you need to solve it in the design phase. Less work in the design phase means more work in the construction.
