Trust is earned through demonstrated consistency. One of the most important steps is to connect with each member of the team individually to understand their needs, engagement needs and expectations of you and the team as a leader. Letting the team know this is happening is also important. Once you you’ve met with everyone, gather the themes, pull everyone together and discuss and agree on a path forward. Building strong relationships in remote or presencial teams requires intentional effort and consistency. Trust issues, often amplified by physical distance in remote work, can be addressed through deliberate actions that are equally relevant in presencial environments. Scheduling regular video calls or face-to-face meetings fosters personal connection and stronger rapport among team members. Setting clear expectations and providing consistent feedback promotes transparency and accountability, both critical for building trust. Additionally, informal gatherings—virtual or in person—encourage team members to share personal achievements and challenges, fostering empathy and a deeper sense of camaraderie.

Trust issues in a remote team can be challenging, but intentional effort helps build strong relationships. Small, consistent actions matter. Reduce friction in outreach; make connecting effortless. Trust can’t be forced, but you can "nudge" it by structuring opportunities for collaboration—joint projects, working sessions, and group check-ins. One approach we used was creating a recurring all-day virtual meeting called "The Cube." Anytime a small group needed real-time discussion that chat couldn’t handle, we’d “go to the Cube.” Often, team members worked with it open in the background, enabling quick, rich Q&A with almost no overhead. It strengthened connections and felt far more natural than chat.
