There are times where the client did not even know how to ask me to address their needs and others where they saw a rival/competitor with a statistical report and wanted it duplicated. Both are difficult because your expertise is somewhat challenged in either case. Advanced preparation about the nature of the industry, challenges faced by firms, and so on are important. Direct answers to concerns and questions are a must as well. I go against the grain a bit and I do not oversimplify complex problems. I have examples ready and certainly simplify, but if you make it seem too easy or simple why do they need an expert.

One thing I have found helpful is starting a complex analysis with a case review. Once the client looks at the journey of a case they better understand the process and after that are able to grasp the analysis better. Secondly,Sometimes I find myself wanting to share every step of the analysis with the client, even when some steps were not fruitful but were effort intensive for me. It's a natural process for me but makes the analysis even more complex for the audience. Avoid doing this, what comes naturally to you might sometimes confuse the client. Too much information could dilute the analysis, so read your audience and curate the story accordingly.
