One thing I have found to be transformational is understanding the WHY behind the posed obstacle or challenge. When I understand the root of the problem we have a clearer plain to brainstorm and design the solution together.

Among the things i found usefull is a paper, a pen and the ability to doodle things. From design itterations to understanding of the problem be it using buble diagrams and flow charts the A4 and pen can do it. The best part is both the clint and us can have a copy assisting in further communications. Tools such as colours, pencil or butter paper enhances the experience by effectively communicating thoughts. Many times handing them the pen to expresess there thoughts works better than verbal or language based communications- as a picture can be worth a thousand words. Also this methord seeds creativity and orignality in design. A culmination of Ideas and thoughts.
