Fire them all, theres more cast in the sea! I JOKE! Cast conflict, Crew Conflict, its all the same... it need managing with care. Listen to all sides, why is there conflict, what has happened to produce such a toxic relationship. See if we can bring them together to discuss, with support from all sides and a mediator, (a producer usually) to help. If you have a Wellness Facilitator, make sure they are involved too. Also if possible do not burden the other actors or Director to facilitate any mediation. It will not help.

Start with prevention. Begin each rehearsal with a meaningful check in and warm up process to see where everyone is at, in terms of their emotional and energetic state of being. If someone is feeling off we give them a little extra space. We model an ethic and an aesthetic of care. We understand that very often people come to the theatre for an emotional release. Actors and audience both need a level of emotional safety to allow that to happen.

Be certain their roles are clear and concise. Address the issue promptly, resolve the issue early. Motivating people is certainly a talent most directors possess (or should). Use it to encourage teamwork and project excitement. Every great project is the product of multiple imaginations!

To address conflicts between cast members during scene transitions, hold a calm, private discussion to understand each perspective and identify specific issues causing tension. Clarify expectations and reinforce the importance of teamwork, focusing on shared goals and the impact of smooth transitions on the overall performance. Offer constructive solutions, such as role adjustments or clearer cues, and encourage open communication during rehearsals to prevent future misunderstandings. Acknowledge individual contributions to foster mutual respect, and remind everyone of their collective responsibility to deliver a seamless production.

In addition to this, in a school setting, I would also learn the context of the conflict and utilize the leadership of the cast members’ peers that we’ve assigned backstage to help them avoid clashing. Depending on the issue, your ASM’s can be helpful in redirecting or keeping them out of each other’s paths.

I have been on shows where extremely challenging cast have been recast and the crew was happy to see it happen. I think it should happen more often in order to set a precedent.

Not sure what this refers to specifically. But if it's a matter of "who moves what bench when" or "who exits when and where and in what order" then that should be all sorted out in rehearsal and tech. Any conflicts should be brought to stage management to resolve. They can pass on any concerns, if necessary, to the creative team.
