Sustainability, like cybersecurity, needs to be built in on every project. If you are facing urgent pressures, don't let perfect be the enemy of good. There will be an ideal sustainability state for the project, but finding balance against short-term needs is still more realistic. Don't solve for the long-term today, but get your immediate deliverable on the path to ease your pain in the future.

I would use the 80/20 pareto principle. Focus on the urgent matters that give 80% of the results. This will help handle issues of burn out and sustainability.

When faced with urgent demands at work, it's crucial to balance immediate needs with long-term sustainability. To handle the pressure effectively, prioritize tasks by their impact and urgency, focusing on high-priority issues while delegating or postponing less critical ones. Break larger tasks into manageable steps and set realistic timelines to avoid burnout. Leverage resources efficiently, streamline processes, and communicate proactively with stakeholders about any constraints. Importantly, maintain a focus on sustainability by considering the long-term consequences of quick decisions, ensuring that short-term solutions do not undermine future goals.

This question lends itself to an essay …. A few thoughts: 1. Is ‘it’ really urgent? If so it is likely to have been identified as a risk now manifesting itself as an issue (not always - ‘Black Swans’)which (if the business risk process is thorough) provides a possible starting position for response. 2. Resilience can be enhanced through practice - testing exercises (numerous formats) build confidence. Practice problem solving. 3. I’m a believer in physical fitness as a contributor to mental wellness - look after yourself (and the team). 4. Delegate (empower individuals). Too often when faced with an urgent issue leaders allow themselves to be pulled in to the tactical detail - micro management. Build the team. I could write more.

When urgent demands peak, resilience stems from strategic foresight and disciplined execution. Begin by redefining urgency—distinguish between what's truly critical and what can wait. Delegate wisely, empowering your team while fostering a culture of shared ownership. Protect your cognitive bandwidth by aligning tasks with clear, long-term objectives, ensuring immediate actions serve broader goals. Embrace micro-recoveries—short, intentional pauses to recalibrate your focus. Finally, cultivate adaptability by viewing pressure as an opportunity for growth, not depletion. Sustainability lies in balancing short-term demands with consistent investment in mental clarity, emotional balance, and strategic alignment.

For sustainability to become long haul, make it a regular affair, inbuilt in your culture, policies and processes. Decide which parts of your projects cannot be compromised as regards sustainability, which if compromised would give more carbon emissions. These should be MUST HAVE. Accordingly, you can include the SHOULD HAVE and COULD HAVE items. Would you compromise with clean drinkable water, or a good air to breathe? Then why compromise here? Find other ways to save costs.

To manage urgent demands while ensuring long-term sustainability, prioritize tasks based on impact and urgency, focusing on what aligns with your strategic goals. Streamline workflows to eliminate inefficiencies and delegate effectively to share the load. Incorporate regular check-ins to reassess priorities and prevent burnout. Emphasize sustainable practices in decision-making, even under pressure, by seeking solutions that balance immediate needs with long-term value. Practicing self-care and fostering a supportive team culture are equally crucial to maintaining resilience and sustaining success over time.

I learned the secret to priorisation from my EA. The Eisenhower Matrix. It's brilliant for those roles where people are banging down your door and your maxed out. I've always worked in sustainability, so for me to achieve my goals I have to be ruthless with my time.
