You're conducting user research. How do you prioritize stakeholder needs alongside core objectives?
In user research, aligning stakeholder needs with core objectives is crucial. To harmonize these sometimes competing demands:
- Identify overlapping goals between stakeholders and users to find common ground.
- Prioritize features based on user impact and business value to create a balanced roadmap.
- Communicate findings transparently to ensure all parties understand the rationale behind decisions.

How do you balance user and stakeholder needs in your research process?
-
To effectively prioritize stakeholder needs alongside core objectives, begin by thoroughly understanding the goals of each stakeholder and aligning them with user-focused objectives. Identify areas where user needs directly support business outcomes, creating a synergistic relationship between the two. Leverage research insights to validate decisions and advocate for user-centered solutions that deliver value to both users and the business. Maintain transparency throughout the process, actively involving stakeholders in decision-making to foster collaboration and buy-in. By focusing on delivering value to both user needs and business objectives, you can create solutions that drive success for all parties involved.

To prioritize stakeholder needs alongside core objectives in user research: 1. Align Goals: Ensure stakeholder needs align with overall research objectives. 2. Open Communication: Maintain transparent communication with stakeholders. 3. Balanced Prioritization: Balance stakeholder inputs with key user research goals. 4. Flexibility: Be adaptable in adjusting priorities based on stakeholder feedback. 5. Regular Updates: Provide stakeholders with regular progress updates to keep them informed. These steps help integrate stakeholder needs while focusing on core research objectives.

To prioritize stakeholder needs alongside core objectives, start by interviewing stakeholders to understand their goals and map them to business objectives. Use a prioritization matrix (influence vs. interest) to identify key stakeholders and rank their needs using a framework like MoSCoW (Must, Should, Could, Won’t). Collaborate with them through workshops or roadmapping tools like Jira and Confluence, and validate their requests with user research to ensure they address real user needs. Communicate trade-offs transparently, offering alternative solutions when necessary, and continuously review and adjust priorities as objectives evolve.

As a Product Manager, I balance stakeholder needs with core objectives by aligning their requests with the product’s strategy. First, I listen to stakeholders to understand their goals and map them to broader objectives, like user retention or revenue growth. I rely on data to assess impact and use frameworks like RICE to prioritize effectively. For example, I might address user pain points flagged by Customer Support if it reduces churn. I balance short-term wins, like resolving technical debt, with long-term goals, ensuring stakeholders feel heard while keeping the product on track. Transparency and collaboration are key.

Stakeholder needs need to be addressed through stakeholder interviews first, and then, objectives and goals of studies are developed from insights from stakeholder interviews. That way, we ensure we are addressing the right questions and get buy-in before the project. If needed, a brief/setup document can later be created by the researcher and shared back to stakeholders who participated in interviews for signoff.

To get started with such needs you need to keep the users in mind at all stages but also take valuable insights from stakeholders since they have been in the business as well, so remember: 1- build something that can be actually useful not just looks shiny 2- stakeholders care! They will care about their business as much as possible but sometimes they are bias to what they have seen 3- Do the right thing! Sometimes with too much pressure, you may tend to slide a bit off the grid of why you came in, so do proper research, proper design and UNDERSTAND who you’re building for. 4- Build something worth sharing! Make something that your users want to share and you would want to share too! Let’s build🚀

The most important thing is communication with the stakeholders. Understanding the ‘What’ and ‘Why’. Then align this with your overall research goal and objective. After this is clearly defined, look out for overlaps and try to compromise where necessary. Lastly, prioritize.

When conducting user research, I focus on finding common ground between stakeholder needs and core objectives. I identify shared goals and prioritize features that offer both high user impact and business value. Clear communication of findings ensures everyone is aligned and understands the rationale behind decisions. It’s about balancing both perspectives to drive meaningful results.

I make sure stakeholder needs align with the project goals by finding common ground between what they want and what the users need. Open chats and teamwork help keep everything clear and balanced for the best results.
