Finding the next talent is often more complicated than it seems. Spotting and nurturing young talent effectively starts with identifying potential earlier than competitors through strategic scouting at camps, leagues, and events. During my time signing pro athletes to Nike Basketball, we cultivated an approach to talent identification by embedding ourselves in grassroots basketball and fostering deep relationships within the athlete’s ecosystem. Success wasn’t just about recognizing talent—it required building trust with their family, friends, coaches, agents, and other key influencers. By understanding and supporting their unique journey, we identified future stars and positioned ourselves as long-term partners in their growth and success.

As a football agent, I believe that building a robust pipeline of talented players is essential for sustained success. While traditional scouting methods remain a cornerstone of my approach, I also utilise data-driven techniques to evaluate players based on metrics. It is also crucial to meet players in person in order to assess their character. I work closely with each young player to create a personalised development plan that includes technical skill improvement, physical conditioning and mental coaching. Furthermore, I emphasise the importance of education in understanding the business aspects of the game. I provide guidance to players and their families on the intricacies of contracts, endorsements and financial planning.

To build a solid pipeline of athletes, the focus starts on early identification of talent in local contexts, looking not only at technique, but also physical, mental potential and work ethic. After selection, it is essential to implement a personalized development program, balancing technical, tactical and behavioral training. The gradual integration of these young people into more competitive teams, combined with mentoring from experienced athletes, helps them grow sustainably. Regular communication with coaches, parents and experts complements the process. Ultimately, creating a culture of excellence, support and resilience ensures that talent thrives in the long term.

To build a strong athlete pipeline it’s key to identify young talent and develop their potential. Investing in young athletes opens up a world of possibilities and dreams for them. Not only will they be able to win in sports, but they will also be given the opportunity for personal growth and fostering a sense of purpose. I believe it is a common misconception that talent recognition for young athletes is simply to find star potential. Before creating a successful athletic pipeline, it is critical to understand why we are doing this. What is considered a talent? How would this contribute to the field of sports? Talent in sports is more than just being fast or strong. It’s about having a blend of innate ability, skills, and determination.

By offering scholarships and structured training plans, we nurtured promising players who lacked access to advanced facilities. Several athletes progressed to regional teams, proving that consistent support and early identification can unlock potential effectively.
