(edited)It’s the same way you keep your family close or make long distance relationships work, for me it’s about having genuine care and interest in the people, having trust and being supportive. Any strategy you put in place just won’t work unless you do the above - it’s about people .. not “teams”.

Remote teams can feel isolated and leaders need to consider innovative ways to keep them engaged especially when it is an international team. The leader can pair team members to check on each other each week. Rotate this to enable collaboration and keep isolation at bay. Being a leader means you may have a lot on your plate but you can also check in with your team members fortnightly due to the time zones. Stay updated with their work loads and wellness to avoid burnout. Incorporating digitisation tools in work and learning activities may help in building a strong remote team.

A couple of things can make a big difference: 1) Encourage team members to have a free flow unstructured conversation equivalent to a hall-way conversation when you are in office. This is where culture is set, the mood is set & bonds get stronger. 2) Meet up in an offline location once a quarter or atleast once in six months - with a good mix of schedule between having fun & working together with a clear purpose. And finally, people will see through, so be right & do right by people. Hope this helps

Have conversations..... If you feel the conversation es getting you closer.....keep going. If yoy feel the conversation is getting you appart, stop it, take a pause, recover the calmness, good and high mood and restart the conversation.

In my experience, I would look to schedule and foster team building activities where we can engage consistently and effectively. I would also look to encourage constructive mentorship that enables unity and substantive exchanges for growth, irregardless of logistics. By being proactive and intentional illustrates a willingness for collaborative leadership, so that everyone feels a part of. Ultimately if the former is reinforced and each personnel buys-in, then the team unity should become apparent.
