Leadership in engineering depends on instilling curiosity and passion. By providing a psychologically secure environment, we transform resistance into excitement, allowing our team to see challenges as chances for breakthrough design, with every constraint serving as a canvas for brilliant solutions that redefine what is possible.

Everyone innovate one thing/process or another. Identify and highlight the same to them by discussing how that small innovation helping them in day to day life for long. They will start appreciating innovation.

Hold brainstorming sessions, and tell the participants that they must each independently come up with a least three substantially different design solutions to the problem. Give them time to do that, and then have each participant explain (and hopefully offer sketches) of their concepts. At one company I worked for, we held brainstorming contests, where each participant had an hour to actually fabricate a demonstration of at least one of their concepts. Then it was "show and tell" time.

I lead by example, demonstrate creative problem-solving, and give team members the autonomy to explore new ideas. Encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration and recognizing innovative contributions also helps spark creativity. Creating an open, supportive environment where failure is seen as part of the learning process ultimately drives the team to embrace innovation.

Encourage experimentation during the conceptual design stages and provide additional timing for these types of designs to develop. Sit with the team members, discuss & embrace the creative ideas, then allow additional timing for the team to explore these ideas without any expectations of success. Allowing the team to explore ideas without the risk of failure always delivers creative solutions to areas of the design that would otherwise be over looked.

Inspiration for innovation requires a well-prepared environment. I always encourage my students to keep moving forward to achieve their goals, no matter how simple they may be. I believe that each of us possesses the ability to innovate. However, it is motivated by the efforts made to learn and gain skills. Putting my team in a lab with tools and equipments is only the first step towards innovation. I ask them to prototype existing systems and then incorporate their ideas into them. I teach them to be confident and learn from their mistakes. I always try to stay close to them and discuss their needs, even if it's about personal matters. Minor issues can stymie significant innovation.

Totally agree that encouraging experimentation and mixing up the team's skills are essential for sparking new ideas, creating a space where failure is okay and exposing the team to an outside inspiration can really help get the creative juices flowing, it’s all about making sure everyone feels comfortable thinking outside the box and trying new things.

Every individual is a unique and creative personality, we need to understand and utilise their strengths by connecting dots of their innovative thought process and understand science behind any kind of innovation. If we motivate them to share their thought process on any kind of design before pointing out their final outcome.
