Team-building activities must relate to the work. Activities solely for the purpose of team-building seldom work. Have them do an activity that helps develop something that they need, e.g., an activity that helps them define the team vision and values. That builds the team and you don't need to defend the benefits.

The challenge with team building activities as that teams are often made up of different genders, ages, cultures and diverse personalities with different things that motivate them so selection of an activity can be tricky. Sports or other games can make some team members uncomfortable so it is important to get team feedback to select something they may like. I worked at one organization that asked employees to donate to Operation Backpack and we made that team activity with the whole team going to Target to buy the school supplies (note: no one was required to buy anything) and we assembled the backpacks together as a team to donate. We took pictures and submitted them to the company newsletter inspiring other teams to do the same.

Listen listen listen, there is a reason behind hesitation, it could be due to old experience, it could be due to personal overload (kids, family..) and and and. Based on the reasons you can act differently, personal reasons evening? Then a team event to be planned morning, work load? Then maybe friday after work? Bad previous experience? Then think out of the box an organize an unusual Team event. That way you achieved two goals 1- you listened and knew whats going on with your Team 2- You organized a Team event that fits your team . There is no one solution that fits all teams.

Team building is different than team bonding. While both have their benefits. Team bonding is building the social connections within your team. Whereas when you partake in team building activities that are designed for purpose bad team dynamics are alleviated. This can be done through utilizing specific activities for different topics or by utilizing the reflection.

Start by having a conversation to understand why they’re hesitant. It may be due to past experiences, workload concerns, or discomfort with certain types of activities. Showing that you value their input and want to make the experience positive can build trust. Make it clear how team-building activities benefit everyone. For example, emphasize how they can help improve communication, foster trust, reduce misunderstandings, and make it easier to collaborate on projects. Consider low-pressure, inclusive activities that align with their personalities and comfort levels. Instead of traditional games, you could try collaborative problem-solving exercises, quick “get to know you” sessions, or even team discussions over coffee.
