Open and honest communication is key here. What is the reason for the unequal allocation of resources? In my experience, this is normally because of resource availability or skills and experience within a team. Times like this are a great opportunity to reinforce to your team that we do not always work in a perfect world and not everyone will have access to the same resources, however, the most important outcome is the sum of all parts. Encourage your team by acknowledging the resource issues and ensuring productivity is measured based on the available resources for each team. During a major product launch, our team faced unequal resource allocation. The development team had ample tools, while the implementation and training teams struggled, straining collaboration and productivity. To address this, I organized a meeting for open dialogue. We identified gaps and fostered empathy. The development team agreed to share resources and assist with testing. We repurposed unused devices, reallocated budgets, set up a rotation for shared resources, and established cross-functional partnerships. The results were remarkable. Actually, this is a product owner and team problem to solve. I question who is defining “equal” and “unfair”. As a leader my goal would be to get to the heart of these definitions, openly sharing the results with the team, while empowering the product owner and team on how best to navigate and deliver the most customer value with the resources available.
