I think an effective alternative to the SMART goals is to use a "from/to/by" framework. Equally important at this step, is to establish leading and lagging KPIs that everyone can align and commit to. The KPIs will be the measurement of success for the goals you've defined.

I think one of the basic roles of the strategic leadership is to get alignment and commitment from everyone, including the team. I think you're the one that has to create the environment so that everyone is aligned to their piece of the strategy AND are fully committed to delivering the results.

Make sure that you know your audience, so then you can adapt your communication style to make it as effective as possible to your audience, which will include your team, stakeholders, executives, customers and others.
