Feedback is important, but in my opinion, the empowerment of future leaders is much more effective. Feedback has the natural reaction of being received as criticism. It can appear to be a subtle command as to how you should be handling a situation. Empowerment of another allows a person the ability to be creative in a given situation. It also allows for the person to own what they are doing. This is a creative process. Feedback is a process of reaction and conformity to advice from another. As we all perceive everything in our own unique way, conformity requires that a person change their perception and process. Empowerment allows the person the ability to create their own solution. Lets empower leaders who are open to feedback.

Constructive feedback helps identify potential leaders, fosters growth, and enhances performance. By actively seeking and providing feedback, organizations can develop a culture of continuous learning and development. In addition to Open Communication, Regular Check In s and Insightful Feedback, consider building the following. - Belief in and alignment to startup’s Purpose & Vision. This will ensure you have the right people for the right reasons, in your pipeline. - Explicitly state the competency framework the organisation looks for and continuously update it as the startup evolves and grows along its life cycle. Make this the basis for all developmental initiatives. - A culture that prioritises Team Achievements over Individual Achievements. This will ensure that both the organisation and the individuals grow.

When feedback is consistent and constructive, it builds trust, fosters open communication, and encourages collaboration—qualities every great leader needs. In a fast-paced startup environment, where adaptability is key, feedback helps sharpen leadership skills and ensures there’s always a pool of capable individuals ready to step up and drive the business forward.

When I started my first company, I realized success depends on building a culture of feedback to grow strong leadership. Feedback is essential for personal and professional growth, but it’s only valuable when you actively seek it. Be a role model by openly asking for feedback, showing vulnerability, and sharing times when seeking feedback could have prevented mistakes. Make feedback a regular part of your work and celebrate those who act on it to improve. By embracing feedback, you create a foundation for continuous development, helping both yourself and your organization thrive as you scale your vision.
