If you want to get more innovation out of your team, it is important to create an “appointment” in everyone’s calendar that they can use solely for creative/innovation time. If it is time is actually blocked off on someone’s calendar, then it is more likely they will put down the daily tasks for an hour or two to focus on new ideas. Of course, it is also important that such activity be rewarded so that team members take the “innovation appointments” seriously and look forward to the time to think creatively and innovate for your company.

"Innovation requires an enabling environment to strike." What worked for me: Encourage open dialogue: I provided a platform for all to feel safe in sharing ideas, no matter how out-of-the-box. Cross-functioning collaboration: Threw together different perspectives that sparked fresh ideas and led to more innovative solutions. Give time for creativity: Set aside dedicated sessions for brainstorming, letting go of daily tasks and thinking through creative means. Celebrate new ideas: Innovation was encouraged, as recognition and reward for the same motivated the team to keep the ball of attitude rolling. A supportive, open culture will keep the creative juices flowing in a small business.

The most important thing is not to kill creativity. Foster new ideas and an environment where you can suggest new ways of doing things. Formality is not important. You can try whatever formal method may work in your specific company, but DO NOT KILL free speech.

Stop using the most dangerous words in business: “This is how we/everyone else has always done it” as the reasons to avoid innovation. Successful business are always looking for ways to reengineer processes or services to better their client base. Whiteboards, crayons, markers, sticky poster paper and let everybody throw any and all ideas on to the wall. Come back to prioritize and start deciding what ideas get implemented. The team effort is energizing, empowering and feels AWESOME!

I found it useful to have regular conversations with team members about my own innovational ideas. Not to advertise my ideas but to spark inspiration and show them they do not have to be afraid to suggest things that are not fully thought through or might be rejected.

Promoting a culture of creativity starts with leadership that has the emotional security to accept that not all good ideas must come from them. Encourage looking for at least three solutions for every issue. Many people stop thinking creatively when presented with a couple of solutions. It leads to evaluation of the merits of each rather than looking for the best solution. Binary choices often don't lead to the best answers.
