In the IT field, maintaining communication during network outages is critical, as we often rely heavily on virtual collaboration rather than frequent in-person meetings. A Business Continuity Plan (BCP) helps us know what to do when communication is lost. If the network goes down because of a provider issue or another connectivity problem, we need a good Disaster Recovery (DR) plan. This plan, which is part of the BCP, should include backup options like mobile hotspots, offline tools, or a secondary network provider. It’s also important to test these plans regularly so the team knows what to do and can stay connected during outages.

When your network goes down, keeping your team connected requires quick action. First, activate backup communication channels like mobile phones, SMS, or apps like WhatsApp. Use mobile hotspots or a secondary internet connection for temporary connectivity. Coordinate efforts with physical meetups or centralised tools like whiteboards. Rely on pre-established emergency plans, such as an incident response plan, with printed or locally stored contact lists. Assign offline tasks to maintain productivity while IT or your MSP works to restore the network. Keep the team updated regularly and conduct a post-incident review to improve future responses. Redundancy and preparation are key to minimising disruption.

Outages are critical. 1) plan BCP. 2) do mock drills. 3) create DR site for servers. 4) use Mobile teams for communication. 5) use 2 firewalls in HA 6) use minimum 2 isp in sd-wan

I say we go for coffee and talk about something else. Maybe after an hour the network will have resolved itself. If not, then maybe we go back and reboot the core.
