One of the first things I teach any lab professional is the importance of monitoring the pending results list. No matter how much effort you put in, if results aren’t delivered on time, the job isn’t done. Real-time workflow monitoring tools help anticipate and prevent delays, rather than just fixing them later. If I had to choose one Key Performance Indicator, it would be compliance with announced TAT. Achieving this requires collaboration between IT, Medical, Technical, and Quality teams. Start simple to ensure visibility, then refine over time. Keeping an eye on results ensures patients receive the best care.

After experiencing lab life from both aspects (in lab and then from the commercial side), it is clear that staff workloads are increasing but staffing levels are decreasing. Automating tedious tasks allows your scientists to free up valuable time to focus on important things like instrument uptime, QC, patient testing, result interpretation and reporting. When skilled staff are doing tasks that add no value to the patient journey, your lab becomes inefficient and allows error to creep in to your process.

As a lab assistant from August 2021 to March 2023, I handled various tasks, including managing media publications, assisting in research, and guiding participants in practical sessions, particularly in operating electric machinery. Clear communication and task delegation were key to ensuring efficiency and timely results. Early exposure to electrical machinery, power electronics , and converters also helped me better assist participants during lab work and manage international journal publications smoothly.

I am totally encouraging shifting toward automation and utilising LIMS. Having KPIs and controlling the samples and results turnover is essential. Training and developing the employees to align them with the latest technologies required for streamline the functions of laboratory. Having the latest instruments and equipment that supports remotely control, which will enable troubleshooting and shortening breakdowns periods.

I would find ways to incorporate automation and highthroughput methods. Automation is a broad term that can mean robotics like liquid handlers. At Johnson & Johnson we incorporated liquid handlers and autosamplers in our methods which streamlined them. At Merck we did almost everything with liquid handlers and automated extractors. However, automation can also include data automation through AI and ML as well as data structuring. I wrote apps to incorporate these into our data analysis. However, if you want to validate the applications, it is much like validating methods in R&D. You will have many guidelines to follow and ot will be a tedious task. At Merck we also used highthroughput analysis including using Unchained Labs technology.
