I substitute teach from time to time. Last school year I was asked to take a fourth grade class for a whole semester. The class had no teacher. The room was drab with no classwork on display. A drab classroom affects student mood. I put the students to work. We got art paper and bulletin board borders in bright colors. Student artwork and assignments decorated the big boards. Happy colored posters with English language concepts fascened on brightly colored backgrounds. The room looked happy so as we entered it in the morning, we felt a sense of ownership. We all decorated. Our seating arrangement was a large square so we could see each other's faces when students worked. I placed an area carpet in the center of the square.

Fostering a positive culture comes in part from a classroom layout, but it really comes from the teacher and the classroom management put into place and adhered to throughout the year. The TEACHER sets the tone, the rules, the procedures. No amount of colorful posters with cliched sayings will make an positive culture. Also, each grade level is different.
