As an experienced user of RMS, Petrel, SKUA, and tNavigator, I've found that each excels in different areas. RMS is great for faulted structures, SKUA integrates well with geophysical studies, and tNavigator seamlessly connects to simulators. tNavigator's unique strengths lie in geostatistical methods and scalability for detailed models, making it ideal for assets in production and multivariate stochastic modeling. Each tool serves specific needs, enhancing efficiency in geological and reservoir engineering tasks.

No doubt there are multiple software available in the market and each has its own USP. I used mostly leapfrog Geo to generate the geological models. I found it very user friendly and more importantly it helps me to be more comfortable in visualising the data and also to integrate other Geo special data along with geology.

I haven't used the software mentioned but used Leapfrog for 3D modelling. Yes it's true that all the software has some limitations on its own but Leapfrog generates a first pass geological model based on the data you acquired and imported so that one can visualise the data in 3D space and can get the idea of the general trend and continuity of the deposits. Also several editing tools and using different methods one can generate the model very similar to its real occurrence.

Create a csv or excel of data on plans and sections. Hand-draw by oido the boundaries of data set you need. There are many ways to determine the incremental (or fibonacci series) cut-off values just like how to kill a cat. After having these 2d plans and sections, proceed to creating the 3d view from any 3d apps available and you had mastered already. Input the boundaries of your needs from the 2d handdrawn into the 3d apps. This is somehow combining the "man-manipulated and computer-aided" creation of the 3d views of what you need. Never rely on just computer alone. Eventually, you will introduce your own revision somewhere where you need them. Good luck.

I'll recommend QGIS for the reason that it has most of the features you need, is easy to learn, and most importantly, it is open-source software, meaning it's available for all to use all of its capabilities for free. Once you've started with it and done a couple of projects, you can transition to other ones like ArcGIS based on features you want to explore which may be limited in QGIS.

Building a static model in a early development stages will be different than building a static model for a mature brown field. What is the development plan for the field? Is it for waterflood or EOR purposes, or may be CCUS? Understand what are the data availability and how can the data improve the static model building. It's very essential to discuss with the Reservoir Engineers as early as possible in the beginning stage of the static model building. Before starting 3D geological model, we must have understanding what the geological data is and in what type geological envioronment was there. It helps in understanding the deposit complexity and type deposit. Based on deposit type and data availibility, best fitted surface chonology method ( deposit, erosion, intrusion, vein type etc.) can be used for developing the 3D model. I used leapfrog software and found quite useful for this. Prior to start developing model, data must be validated and sorted otherwise whatever method we use for developing the model, it can mislead. Developed model should be verified with other data like more drillhole data, exposures in mine or on surface whatever is accessible to validate the model.

One thing I have found helpful is visualizing the available information in 3D without putting any biases. Then understanding the current stratigraphy or the sequence of the geology. And then visualizing in mind and inferring what could be the sequence at the beginning and how the geology evolved with time to look like it is in the present. If you can visualize the complete story, the building of the geological model becomes easy.

Other I find helpful include Ensuring you have all the data that is necessary(including analogues). Data collection process is really crucial. Helps you identify what you have and don’t have and which methods to use. Data QC, it’s essential and forms a basis of an accurate model. Representative data have to be used. Selecting the tool to use. The trick here is that it has to be robust and easy to use. I personally prefer petrel for the 3D modeling And finally what is the purpose for your model.

A conceptual model is mostly the stating point. With that in mind a review of the available data is key. A look at previous work in the area also important. No software captures all the available data like PETREL. Petrel is King. Integrating geophysical and geological data is handled seamlessly. Ability to review, share and update models on the fly with new and relevant data easily done. Most importantly accurate volumes prediction and sensitivity analysis of the parameters leading to this prediction and subsequent simulation within the same environment.

So let’s consider how raw data is handled in your software: 1. I assume you have completed the “idiot” data checks of incorrect co-ords, -ve, missing, or spurious data, non-sequential/gaps in depth data, etc. 2.How does your software handle co-ords? (Most are Cartesian- Y increase upwards, X increase LtoR). You may have to manipulate your coords to accommodate this (multiply by -1 ). Also consider your ideal display - north doesn’t always have to be to the top. Many computers battle to process/ display large amounts of data, so learn to be clever in what you load whilst you work.
