You have to communicate complex algorithms to stakeholders. What’s the best way to make them understand?

Main goal of any communication is caring about the person who you are talking to. You need to make sure they can easily understand you, feel valued, and want to continue working with you.

The first step is to have clear definition of the objectives of the communication. With these in your mind, you need to work out who are the stakeholders, what are their roles, how you objectives may affect their goals (either positively or negatively), what are their comfortable communication style and approaches. These are starting point to prepare your next move.

Use visuals. I use shapes to convey entities, diagrams to connect them for better comprehension, and gifs to add emotion. Remember that stakeholders already admire your intelligence. When you take the time to explain the information they're trying to understand, and you accomplish it, you then create a stronger bond within your team that will continue to move projects forward within your organization.

The main purpose of communication is to present or tell the complex solution or complex idea to a targeted audience. This can be achieved by doing in-depth research about the audience and knowing what is the technical literacy of the audience and what is the non-technical literacy of audience. This research can play a crucial role in the communicating a very complex solution.

Pictures matter here. Pay attention to the visualizations and involve a designer if you can. Sometimes it's just impossible to tell something verbally without overwhelming the audience.

Stakeholders are problem solvers, just like you. I only explain the parts that are currently causing, or could cause problems within the system, that is everyone's priority at that moment. I don't explain parts that are unnecessary or don't add value to meeting.

Uma estratégia eficaz é usar árvores de decisão, explicando com exemplos simples e traduzindo problemas do mundo real para conceitos computacionais. Ao fazer essa ponte e abstrair a complexidade, conseguimos fazer com que o público entenda melhor a solução. Por exemplo, ao explicar um algoritmo de recomendação de filmes, podemos utilizar uma árvore de decisão para mostrar como o sistema decide qual filme sugerir com base nos interesses do usuário. Essa abordagem torna o conceito mais palpável e acessível para pessoas que não estão familiarizadas com termos técnicos.

Transparency and honesty are a huge part of caring about the listener. If they feel even one thing if not 100% true, they can start thinking everything else you talked about is not true either - and the goal you your presentation will not be met.

In my experience it is a collective process of many aspects. It’s not about doing one or the other. But emphasizing on all of these. 1. Acknowledge the limitations and exceptions. But during presenting, streamline to the most salient factors. 2. Break down the algorithm into building blocks, explain them. Then stack it up incrementally to show how it works as a whole. 3. While doing #2, also provide some examples, as well as boundaries/limitations and the “why” behind them. 4. Pause during your delivery and listen/understand how far they have come. Answer clarifying questions and ask simple questions to help audience understand. 5. Lastly, keep in mind that the objective is to help them understand. Not only to show how cool it is.

One thing I’ve found that helps in understanding complex or advanced concepts is storytelling. Storytelling is a powerful tool that can be used to explain complex algorithms in a way that is both engaging and informative. By using stories, we can help people to understand the underlying principles of algorithms and how they work. We can also use stories to illustrate the real-world applications of algorithms and how they can be used to solve problems.
