Managers are rightly worried about workers wasting time. It's fine to walk the dog as long as you put in the hours. There is no one to check your productivity early in the morning or late at night. It really does freak managers out. I suspect it's less about the company and more about justice and fairness. Anyway, my recommendation is to promise you will send a daily recap email to your boss if s/he agrees to compromise. This is a big deal and quite the promise. You will need to produce enough each day to create the email [or] say you were unproductive because of the constant interruptions! It's a good deal for all. It ensures productivity and allays manager fears. And you are basically writing your annual performance review!
