What are the most effective ways to encourage a culture of learning?

Culture of learning? I would recommend hiring for ‘will’ and train for ‘skill’. And always try and find curious people to join a culture of learning. A culture of growth doesn’t happen with a ‘fixed’ mindset. Good luck!

It sounds a bit quirky but it has held me in great stead all my career. Look for the magic on button in your team, then the rest is easy. If they are closed then help them to find their place. If they are "curious" or passionate to make that difference then it is joy to be around and build success.

It's crucial to actively encourage all participants to attend at least one quarterly training. We usually announce upcoming sessions via email and rely on self-nominations, but we've noticed that many miss out because they assume they don't need it. We believe it's not up to participants to decide if they need specific training. For example, a brief Chat GPT basics session can benefit all company leaders. While they may not absorb all ten lessons, they can certainly apply one or two takeaways to improve their work. Our goal is to provide everyone with the knowledge and tools they need to excel in their roles. Encouraging participation in training sessions is vital to achieving a learning culture in the organization.

Listen 👂 to your employees. Don’t just brush off the suggestions. By listening you open the line of communication and see the gaps that are missing. This drives the culture towards what is needed. People who are heard are engaged and will want to learn more to do better not only for the organization but for their own personal growth.

Focus on the difference between learning and development. For me this is about looking at how you develop people on the job, create opportunities for networking and then think through formal or informal learning resources. This stems from the top, giving space and time snd encouragement but also clarity on what learning means to them and the organisation. People learn in different ways to so think through the channels on snd offline which will enable people to learn be that new skills, increased capability etc

From my point of view, I will say that linking learning to performance will definitely drive the culture of learning. When an employee sees the impact a new skill and knowledge has on his/her work output, the employee's learning agility is increased.

I have seen accountability work like a charm. Accountability from executives to frontline workers, we need to make it matter. Create specific performance goals around development, and equip leaders to coach to those goals. It may not sound as elegant as casting a vision or mission around learning, but it does create a culture of learning.

Creating an organisation development framework that managers understand and can adhere too helps personal development planning to be realistic and focused. The framework should clearly define what opportunities and recourses will the organisation support and finance.

- Ask in the team: "what have we learned yesterday" - If a colleague goes to a conference, he/she/they can come back and share highlights to see together how they could be applied - we choose a book related to our objectives and then share key messages ("Jane Austen book club in 2023") - set a up a sharepoint to store key articles indexed so that easy to look for - With a problem we say "what new tool or approach could we use" - "a breakfast with..." for informal networking and cross functional awareness: a colleague shares something of interest - "circle of curiosity": in team meetings 15' round with all the questions we would like to ask but no answer - a moment dedicated to biggest inventions or creativity moments to be inspired from

Foster an ecosystem where every critical skill is appreciated. Link promotions to capabilities which will encourage employees in acquiring knowledge those niche skills. It will directly help organizations in building capabilities. Run Skill based mapping exercise on Quarterly basis if Monthly not possible. Ensure the manager keeps there one on one discussion around capabilities and skills. Adopt gamification models to build the competition spirit.

Its important to understand each member of your team first do the SWOT and then plan accordingly to achieve the best result.. Once we know the strength and weakness it will help us and even the team to have the right learning path for each individual to get the best outcome

free access to learning resources is a strong activator to learning, where the learner needs to take initiative with autonomy and.. curiosity! otherwise it is top down training/skilling what can be part of the game now as they used to be. But will not trigger a learning environment and community.

Celebrating success is key to any transformation, especially during a culture change. It doesn´t need to be complicated, you can for example pick a weekly moment where you praise achievements and wins in the team. By doing so, you set an example and this facilitates adoption of the same mindset by the team.

Each week, in my leadership meeting and 1:1s, I ask three questions: 1) What went well last week? 2) What didn’t go so well? 3) what did you learn? Over time, People become more reflective learning from successes as well as “ failures” and recognise With building the bank of wins that they are growing as a leader, team or individual.

It is key that there is psychological safety in order to promote learning internally. Lead by example, be vulnerable and celebrate failures. It is important that people start sharing what they have learned from courses, external learnings and errors they have made. It might be difficult from the start but once the first learnings have been shared, it will get easier quickly.

I believe that ‘out of failure comes great learning’, the more we learn to disrupt, ask or challenge is when growth and innovation happen. Fundamental for change to occur is trust and psychological safety. Leaders need to build a safe net of feedback loops where people are able to ask challenging questions or can experiment and fail without fear of reprisal.

The context of our work, and therefore our learning environment, will always be changing. Therefore having a ‘continuous learning’ mindset is really helpful and important, especially if you’re a leader or manager. Being prepared to talk out loud about how and where you’re learning can be inspiring for others. We learn in many ways and through a variety of situations, so if we are open to talking about that, it can help others greatly. We shouldn’t underestimate what other people might be inspired by. :)

I believe that learning is one of life's vital signs, with human nature, curiosity and self-interest as key drivers. Organisations should seek to understand how people learn and that they may learn differently - and adapt the way they provide their learning 'offer' to reflect this. Understand the needs of the modern learner who has: - multiple commitments and need to prioritise their time - want learning available 'on-demand' - want collaborative learning from managers and peers as much as experts - want practical outcomes from the learning - stuff that relates to their experience and work - want more control over their learning, even if that is supported by discussions with managers and coaches

Leaders driving the learning culture. From my experience when leaders talked about the learnings that they picked up along the way and shared the learnings with the rest of team. It will create ripple effects through out the organisation.

It starts with the attitude from the top. What is the c-suite's approach to learning in the organisation? How does it cascade down the management levels? Are line managers confident to support their team learners in putting new knowledge etc into practice, making mistakes along the way, giving honest, respectful, constructive feedback and developing their own coaching and mentoring skills, too? Are the trainers seen and encouraged as partners to the business rather than obedient assets, asking the difficult, probing questions and holding a mirror up to the business? It starts from the top and is a golden thread weaving its way all through the businesss.
