Professional Development Workshops Encourage or facilitate attendance at workshops and seminars that focus on these areas. Discuss key takeaways and how they can be applied in practice. Project-Based Learning Guide your mentee in developing a small-scale project that requires active parent and community involvement. I would suggest focusing on a specific area of interest to the mentee and tailoring a plan to assist them in an end goal. For example, a mentee may be interested in improving a particular process within the organization, thus, a tailor program that includes conference, course etc., can be formulated to assist the mentee achieve his goal. Setting output or outcomes goals can further motivate the mentee because the tailored plan has purpose. Seeing how their work takes shape and assists the organization improve will be extremely rewarding!

Follow up is extremely vital to the success of any plan and in my experience, is something leaders do not do well in terms of development. Asking open ended questions is key, such as “what do you think contributed to the success or failure of X?” Or perhaps asking “while making a particular decision, did you consider this?” These questions allow for the mentee to reflect and enhance their critical thinking skills. Additionally, sessions like these allow mentors to share personal experiences and failures, to assist mentees make effective decisions in the future.
