I apply the accessibility techniques I learned when training in course design to all courses. I don't wait to see if a particular course has disabled students, as they law requires me to do this for all courses, in advance. Also what helps people with a disability also helps other students.

The courses we design by default need to be inclusive and accessible to all learners. We don't need to conduct an audience analysis to plan an inclusive course. A few essential elements of designing inclusive and accessible courses are: Accessible Content: Use simple, clear instructional content. Create transcripts/captions/description for audio/video/images. Incorporate Adaptive Technologies: Try to integrate technologies like screen readers, voice recognition, and adjustable display settings. Navigation and Interaction Design: Provide multiple navigation options like keyboard and avoid timed interactions. Feedback and Support: Offer multiple communication channels to accommodate requests from different types of learner profiles.

I work closely with our Disabilty Resource Center. They identify the students' needs and I provide accommodations. I frequently provide enlargements of materials used, provide extra time for required tests and writing assignments, etc.

When selecting an e-learning platform, spend some time researching their committment to accessibility. You can check if they have a VPAT or Accessibility Statement on their website, and also do some googling to see if anyone has reviewed the platform for accessibility. LMSs are well-known for being inaccessible, so it's worth putting in the time to find one that suits as many learners as possible (I'd recommend Thinkific at the moment!).

The biggest design mistake I see is when people create one design to meet all accessibility needs. That often results in bland, boring content. By all means try to make your content accessible but recognise that sometimes the solution is to have two designs - one with more complex activities and visuals for the majority of your learners and maybe a second one with a more straightforward, simplified structure to cater to those more dependant on assistive technologies.

From my experience, 1 of the main gross mistakes any content designer can do is assume that the learner will automatically understand what they mean courtesy of their education or status. By avoiding these assumptions and treating learners as non-experts in the area of your content allows you to be simple , straightforward and concise with your instruction , thus reducing misinterpretation of the concepts and message delivered.

It is often crucial to have move universal adaptations to e-learnings that make them more accessible and engaging, this often benefits non disabled learners also. In addition you can have a suite of 'optional' accessibility measures that an individual learner has access to, to make the learning as accessible as possible for their unique needs.

It shifts the onus from disabled people, for example, to disclose medical information to complete strangers in order to be accommodated.
