This transition sounds more like going from industry to academia (research). However, even in the industry context, many aspects of geology is quantitative. For research purposes, geologic data could be interpreted to have widely varying meanings i.e. highly subjective interpretations based on level of experience, type of data manipulation, etc. In data analysis, slight data manipulation error could lead to a totally different geological outcome that could go unnoticed and reported. While in industry cross-discipline setting this error would likely be spotted and corrected in the course of integrating data across disciplines.
