This is a serious challenge in virtual facilitation. For attendees, the temptation to 'multi-task' during attendance and rely on recordings strong. First, set ground rules from the start; camera on, no calls or emails. Second, be more casual, humorous and engaging. People naturally want to talk to friends more than work colleagues or authority figures so, by speaking with more friendly tones and language and introducing some personalisation, while still maintaining professionalism, you can quickly create a relaxing and more desirable environment to engage. Third, remember you're speaking WITH people, not computers. So, remember to ask lots of questions, starting with super simple ones to crack the silence then work up to critical ones.
