Which area are more active, which are more quiet, how many sequences, which is the sedimentation direction, what comes first, what comes later, any funny areas or funny looking things, any particular bad data area, what’s the polarity and phase (if possible) so you have a rough idea of the data. Don’t make judgement or interpretation but instead understand the data. Is it properly process? Are there multiples and noises that should have been removed by still remains in the data?

Understand the tools and what it is doing. If you don’t, you’ll not understand what it is showing and why. Default parameters is good for an initial understanding but it might not be the best to bring the most out of your data. Use perceptual colour scales. Understand what colour scales works best with what kinds of data. Not all rainbow colour schemes are equal. Avoid colours that distorts the data and introduce bias. Sometimes gray scale or black white works better for your data. Geology is not monotonous, so your visualisation should not be monotonous. Just like putting contours on top of contours brings more out of your data, advance visualisation like multi attributes with complimenting colour schemes show more of your data.

All tools are built around certain fundamental concepts. They are based on physics. Some does this better than others. So choose the right tool for the right job. In the end, the tool only works as well as the interpreter behind it. If there’s no understanding of the software fundamental principles, it’ll not help. But if you do, it can tremendously improves what you can do with your data.
