What strategies have you found successful in overcoming language barriers at events?
-
Talk to new people at networking events. Attend new events. Create authentic relationships. Bring a memorable business card. Be confident. Stay connected. Help others in your network.

Language barriers in networking sessions can hinder meaningful connections, but they can be addressed effectively. Facilitating real-time translation through apps or live interpreters allows smoother communication. Promoting a common language, like English, while offering support for non-fluent participants, levels the playing field. Visual aids, such as keyword cards or infographics, help convey key messages. Creating multilingual spaces with moderators ensures inclusivity, while structured activities like roundtable discussions reduce the pressure of initiating conversations in a second language. Tackling these barriers not only enhances attendees’ experiences but also builds a more diverse and connected global network.

La Inteligencia Artificial hace que las barreras del lenguaje dejen de ser un obstáculo. Hay distintas herramientas, pero Microsoft ya te permite traducir en tiempo real.

I believe the networking sessions should be conducted in simpler, more accessible English. As a widely spoken global language, English allows for easier communication and ensures that participants from diverse backgrounds can engage effectively.

Thanks to the smart Ai translation that can be faster and efficient in assisting with the pace during the network sessions. Another optional feature the translation system used in United Nations during conferences. This is a great question and one that I recently engaged in real life. On a recent business trip to one of my industry's largest conferences for meetings, events, hospitality and incentive travel, I was on a mission to raise the voices of anyone who wanted to contribute to why we should mandate psychological safety training. We had 60 voices in 2 days who embraced the topic of mental health in the workplace with no hesitation. Two of those people were spanish women who I welcomed to share their thoughts in their native tongue. It matters to me to bring any and all voices who wish to converse about a very sensitive topic because the world does not revolve around english all the time. As we create a documentary, their voices matter.

Make deliberate attempts to learn about others especially their language. Two other foreign languages will help. This attempt is not to gain utmost competence in such language but at least to have a conversational knowledge of them.

World is moving fast and forward, and improving the way we communicate among us triggers potential success. There are some cases where you’re not able to understand others words due to a language difference. I dare to suggest that sometimes we speak the same language and we don’t event understand each other! But, when language barriers appears, you can gesticulate as if it were a performance. Be a performer. Open your mouth while talking to be clearer, use your eyes movements and hands to guide the message, and entonation to deliver the value. You can use drawing or translators.
