It is a matter of time one can get used to tools based on the training that is imparted to the junior engineers. It is recommended to follow the following process to train them: Training --> Self learning --> On the job training --> Exercises The initial training should be based on process based rather than person based. It should be accompanied by work instructions (WIs) for a given example, preferably CBT before peer collaboration for 'on the job training'. Examples as well as exercises can be categorized into simple, intermediate & complex and the engineers can attempt them based on successful evaluation at each step. The issue with learning of any tools is that unless one practices on regular basis it is difficult to use it efficiently.

Start with ensuring that engineers grasp the basics of aerospace engineering disciplines. It’s all too easy to get a numerical solution from software tools but unless the solution supports ‘common sense’ reasoning then the data input to the tool must be questioned

Best to go back to basics. Learn the fundamentals and concepts first gradually moving to solving compatible problems using tools.

What has always worked for me in learning new softwares has been watching tutorial videos and speaking with experts of the softwares involved.

I am actually surprised that "junior engineers are struggling with aerospace software tools". It has been my experience that one of the main strengths of more junior engineers is how quickly they can become experts at engineering software packages. However, if I were to encounter an engineer that is struggling with tools I would have them work through multiple practical real-life problems, mapping out clear and simple steps. Allowing the engineer to work the entire process while the mentor makes suggestions and adjustments.

Every struggle is unique. Identifying each struggles individually is the key initiative which often lags full utilisation of available potential. After that there comes optimisation skill to channelise individuals in most suited training path available organizationwise. Watching tutorial videos and practicing along has been most helpful to me so far. Also following step by step instructions makes it easier to recognize and fix an error.
