Even though technological advancements over the last 20-30 years has made it easier to calculate circuit analysis, there is still an important use for understanding the core principles from a mathematical approach. Circuit analysis can be carried out with a push of a button and design can just be copied and pasted. However, in the utility world where people's safety is always the number one objective, you must be able to understand what is being affected in a circuit anytime you make a change to components or systems. Though you may not need to analyze a circuit by hand at every move, it is invaluable to understand what the voltage, current, and grounding path will look like when changing a circuit's state on paper or in the field.

Cutting-edge tech is always exciting in the utility world. Caution MUST be used though as the new tech needs to be not only tested vigorously, but also come with with a guarantee of it's lifespan. You can't install a piece of equipment and it unexpectedly fails within 3 years. Planning outages sometimes requires moving mountains by multiple parties so replacing equipment often is undesirable. Generally though, as part of testing we might be able to use new tech in a parallel and null output installation giving a real world look at what this tech can do and what it's limitations may be.

Even though the overall operation of a system may be unchanged, the way in which newer equipment is utilized may be completely different.
