The below sequence is the most standardized approach in fault location- 1. Prompts on Driver Display Unit (DDU): Modern-day Rolling Stock is well equipped with appropriate alarms and warning signals on DDU. Identify the subsystems generating a prompt and note down the alarm/warning code. These codes can be in alphanumeric format. 2. Refer to the Maintenance Manual: For the alarm/warning code observed from DDU, read the code description. Eg. The error can be from the over-temperature observed in the traction motor. 3. Check Status: Check the health status of all the protection circuits and switchgear for the corresponding system. Eg. In the case of Motor over-temperature, what is the status of the thermal relay?

Fault Isolation is done by below means: Sensed Reversible Isolation - A relay will sense the signal threshold lanes mits and generate actuation command for breaker or contactor. Eg. Thermal relay will open the main contactors for motor. Sensed Irreversible Isolation - Fuse is classic example of sensing element but the isolation is irreversible unlike circuit breaker. Hence the element has to be replaced in such isolation cases. You should learn all the information you can from experienced technicians. Just learning is not enough. You should record it and then pass it on to those who need it.

For troubleshooting,you must be aware about the train control drawing (emergency, parking brake,door, compressor...), knowing the function of each component in the circuit like relay or bush button you must study relation between pneumatic system and electrical . I agree with you troubleshooting related to experience of technicians but it depends on the study first and know the function of each component and if failed what will happen.

Rolling Stock is a multidisciplinary system including, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Controls, etc. Peer learning plays a vital role in understanding and assessment of faults. 1. Try to gather and understand the impact on electrical systems due to faults in other systems like Train Control (TCMS), Load Distribution Network, LV (110V & 24V) power supply, HVAC, etc. These gathered repositories can be later implemented during the designing of the electrical system such that better reliability in design can be achieved. 2. Volunteer for RCA performance of cross-functional teams like Validation, Change Management, etc. 3. Contribute system-level details with the Reliability & Maintainability team to FMECA, RMAP, RAMS plan.
