How do you build and maintain a strong and diverse network of partners and allies?

Start with the end in mind. Understand the vision of the community, what it looks like if you accomplished everything you want to set out to do and establish your mission statement which is how you plan to execute on that. The core of communities are people and by understanding the end result you want to achieve you'll be better positioned to align yourself with partners that have shared interests. With aligned goals you can assure that your community is moving in the same direction together, forward.

When I was in my sophomore year of high school, I read a book by Keith Ferrazzi: Never Eat Alone. The conclusory message of the book was to use a certain mindset and tactics to build relationships strong enough so that when you ask for someone's support, they won't tell you no. So my first piece of advice is to read that book... Another start would be to create a list of 10 partners/companies that you want to be connected with and reach out to them. Offer to host a joint-team dinner, or simply schedule coffee; but if you come off with confidence and a reason to be helpful, then they will be happy to meet with you. In regard to maintaining relationships, just regularly reach out to people and mutually share updates in a non-spammy way.

For example, you can be a community that supports entrepreneurs but there are different types of entrepreneurs from those starting out, ecommerce owners or even SaaS founders. Understanding how your community provides value to these personas. For the student it might become a resource for them to learn while for the solopreneuer it might simply provide them companionship through their journey. Mapping personas to offerings is a great way to understand your community messaging.

Investing in relationship is one of the most important actions you can do when building trust within a community. Trust happens through time and consistency. If you are providing value and not asking for anything in return in the beginning your members might ask, what's the catch? Over time they'll trust to believe your community is everything you say it is. The problem most communities face is when they reach a point of critical mass they break the trust of the community by losing their way from their original purpose. They might say they want to help the community but what they truly want is to monetize it.

The key to a lasting and genuine relationship is communication. From the outset of the process, partners must understand why they are involved, what they can expect from others, and what is expected from them. Establishing these expectations sets the tone for clear communication, ensuring that partners remain engaged and involved

It's very important that whatever partnership you engage with, it's mutually beneficial for your partner, for your company and of course for your community. Having partners that share common values and goals helps to build genuine and successful partnerships. It's also important to establish a time to follow up with your partners and make sure that you are still aligned on the same goals periodically.

“Trust is the gold dust” as I like to say. It takes time to achieve and a second to lose. Trust comes from regular conversations built on openness and transparency. I find getting two parties to discuss a particular (mutual) problem from their individual perspectives is a good engagement tool for building trusting relationships.

In my experience the greatest partnerships you can form within a community are with your community managers. Managers are not selected but elected and empowering them to truly feel that this community is theirs as much as it's the founders is crucial. There are only so many relationships one can manage and great communities requires bold leadership. The best leaders create and promote leaders.

Partnerships are similar to a plant sometimes there isn't much to do but they always need to be nurtured. All it truly takes is one power partner to change the landscape of your community. These partners can bring in social proof and prestige which will attract new members while also reengaging existing ones that have dropped in activity over time.
