After a few decades of producing on the local level, the ability to express myself utilizing fleeting trends and the latest software wizardry is a rare luxury. My portfolio is chock full of this reality. We do not own our creations. The difference between bad, and great oftentimes hangs on the whims of an uninvolved spouse or business partner. There are so many user-friendly template web design services these days, find one you like and if you're building it yourself keep it simple and reflect the type of work you want to do. Maybe write some blog post case studies.

I hate following trends for 'trend's sake' but biting the style of a prominent content creator can be valuable. Companies who feel like they are taking a risk by hiring a freelancer can be put at ease when the look and feel of your content is high end and on-trend. They will feel more comfortable knowing that they are hiring someone who will do the same with their content.

Including some behind-the-scenes footage really gives your prospective client a true understanding of what it would be like to work with you. Including a few videos which break down your editing process from start to finish can also be a really great way to showcase your knowledge and expertise with video editing.

Like designer portfolios, put in a paragraph or just a header telling what the video was for; Who was it meant for; Why was this style of edit chosen etc at-least after a decent no. of edits in your career

For each video project, I have a process in place to ensure I don't forget anything. I like to use Notion for all of my work. Within Notion I have a dashboard that gives me an up-to-date overview of all ongoing projects. When I start a new project, it is already populated with a template to ensure I don't forget anything at any stage of the project. For example: When I complete a video project, there is a checkbox to ensure that I ask every client for a review. The next checkbox is “Upload video to website” to update my portfolio. In this case, I can never forget to update my portfolio regularly and keep it fresh.

you have to consume a lot of content not as a guldacha, but as a creator. You can watch videos without sound to see if the picture catches you and if you are interested in watching it. You can listen to the sound and imagine what is happening on the screen and then see if your expectations coincide with the real picture

I think the most important thing, in this age of fast paced innovation, is to show adaptability to the latest innovations in the space you work within. In my case, as an animator, I found that showcasing an interest in learning innovative ways to produce video content was an invaluable tool to make myself a valuable asset. In practical terms, this has meant branching out of the traditional video formats and exploring innovative solutions such as Rive and Lottie animations. I'd strongly suggest building a portfolio that strikes a good balance between traditional pieces of video content and innovative solutions. I'd also strongly suggest showing that you can comfortably work with AI tools, as they'll very rapidly become common place.

Consider that when someone is looking at your portfolio they have just gone from a cold lead to a warm lead because now they know you! You want it to be that if they even watch your portfolio when you are in a coma with no way of reaching you (God forbid) that you wake up to a message from them. Think of your portfolio as what we call the free Salty Nuts that you give out at a cinema. Whats the next thing that will happen? Your lead is now thirsty and needs to quench their thirst so they will pay for a water bottle, juice, etc. Make your portfolio the Salty Nuts that make them pay for your core product.
