In my experience, seeking opportunities and willingness to take advantage is crucial. Good time management will allow you to complete your classes, prepare your students, and be available for professional development despite a busy Higher Education schedule. Good time management is impossible without setting priorities and knowing what to say no and yes to.

Atentar-se para a gestão do tempo, com metas bem definidas e realísticas podem ser diferenciais na realização de tarefas. Vale listar as metas e procurar limitar-se a suas realizações.

SMART goals is the best way to make a good plan. Also defining what is urgent/not urgent would help to make a clear plan. Learning to prioritize is a big challenge, but sticking at this framework will definitely improve the way to make realistic goals.

Puedo partir de que mi experiencia formativa y laboral, practicamente el 90% de ella, se realizo en paralelo, es decir, trabajando y estudiando. En ese sentido considero que el enfoque y equilibrio es fundamental y ello se logra optimizando el tiempo es decir dando relevancia a lo importante, en ambos ambitos, que te acerquen a los objetivos. Por ejemplo la aplicación de lo formativo en lo laboral, de manera inmediata puede afianzar el conocimiento adquirido y fijarlo como una nueva herramienta, ello ayuda que el aprendizaje sea mucho más productivo ya que literalmente se aplica en tiempo real. Considero que se debe evitar la sobre carga y el cumplimiento por deber antes que por convicción, pues esto último aporta al desarrollo profesional.

According to me, it's all about your inner potential and eagerness to learn new things. If you want to change something in your current status, you have to be different from others. All you need to remember few things: 1. Follow your heart less, follow your mind more. 2. Accept that consistency is extremely boring but beneficial in the long term. 3. Prioritize, prioritize, I can’t say this enough. The fact is not everything has the same level of importance especially not at the same time. So it’s imperative we learn to ascribe a level of priority for each action we need to take. Um planejamento efetivo deve ser pensado com antecedêcia, é preciso pensar o que precisa ser feito para que seja possível atingir as metas estabelecidas; é preciso buscar informações e calcular riscos. I have found it very helpful to attend workshops related to my field. I additionally also pursue certifications of other subjects that may not directly impact success in my field. Attending such workshops ensures you receive first hand information about trends and developments. It is also an opportunity to connect with people from the field.

Finalmente, luego de un tiempo en la búsqueda de tu meta profesional si te sientes frustrado, considero que evalúes tu situación y reflexiones si sos feliz siguiendo ese camino original o preferís otra cosa. En el primer caso, no hay que desanimarse y si uno cambia de parecer no hay que juzgar. Lo vital es mejorar cada día un poco.

I think the secret is "synergy". Higher education is the perfect industry to use opportunities for professional development. By default, higher education institutions and higher education adjacent companies offer professional development opportunities, and many for free. All you need to do is look and create that synergy!

I find that Learning in the Flow of work can support a Learner Worker to grow and develop. In a fast-changing world, continuous education can support any individual to stay confident in their role, upskill, re-skill or re-invent. However, most employees or leaders are very busy and don't have time to fit formal education into their work life. So, I find that learning in the flow of work and being able to apply right away what they learned, is a great solution for their growth and development personally and professionally.

Use your commute and workout time as your classroom. Instead of listening to the radio or music, be intentional with the podcasts, audiobooks, and audio courses, that will allow you to professionally develop and grow.

If you find that professional development keeps falling off your calendar because you’re “too busy,” remember this: it’s not just for you. In the long run, you owe it to your students, your colleagues, and your institution to develop yourself professionally. So budget some of your time for it, and make it a priority.

In many higher ed institutions, predominantly publicly funded ones, professional development funds for non-faculty employees (i.e., staff) are meager, if they exist at all. Taking advantage of online learning is one way to mitigate this, as many institutions have learning management systems with high-quality training available. The challenge comes when folks don't learn well in those circumstances. There are some folks for whom the online learning doesn't work. To be more inclusive, institutions must re-evaluate how they provide professional development opportunities to staff. The rank-in-file staff members may find it challenging to find a professional association where they might fit in and be able to network and learn.

In my experience from a leadership point of view, I strongly believe in some kind of incentive system. Specially for facilities, being recognized and rewarded for participating in PD/workshops works really well. In my college, form the center for teaching and learning, we are starting a series called “lunch n learn” where faculty and staff would share their best practices once in a month. The amount of support and acceptance I received so far is amazing. Apart from lunch, we are also planning to provide certificate of participation and some stipend.
