How can you choose the right test?

There are two major goals or business problems we always try to solve using statistical tests: 1. Whether the interpretations on the sample data hold true in the population as well, which basically means if the same scenario happens again what is the probability that the results will be close to this current data 2. To compare between different groups of data and understand whether it proves or disproves a business hypothesis Statistical tests help in the above two scenarios and have huge implications in moving from uncertainty to certainty in any business scenario

In addition, test also serve as a means of validation or disproof of proposed theories or models. Properly conducted tests provide empirical evidence, allowing researchers to gauge the reliability and validity of their findings.

In essence, a test is a statistical method employed to address a research question or business hypothesis. By establishing both the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis, statistical methods are then applied to determine which one holds significance.

For example, "The company has a problem getting shipments out the door in a 24 hour window. It's speculated that these 3 things affect those shipments. Here's how we went about proving that..." Restating the problem you tried to solve before saying "weather affects shipments" circumvents the response "well, we knew that".

The type of test is primarily influenced by the question of interest (research, business, ...) and the body of knowledge available. Whenever exploring a new phenomenon, screening designs may be used. These are analysed using regression analysis techniques. Whenever optimising a process, specific experimental designs are usually used (optimisation, optimal designs). Response surface methodology is commonly used. Generally speaking the choice of a data analysis method depends on the nature of the response (continuous, discrete), the number of explanatory variables, the structure of the empirical data (experimental design), the data imbalance, ... The analysis plan should be developed in the design phase of a study/experiment/trial.
