Designated areas for different types of use is a great idea, but I learnt that you have to have enough space for this to work. After a library refit I used signage, furniture and shelving to create a "silent area", a "quiet study area" and then other areas for more casual use. But the entirety of the library was just too small for this to work effectively. In the end I had to rely much more on the students (a school library) to regulate themselves - have a quiet working environment when they needed it, and then descend into a busy hub during break times.

Signs are crucial. It's so obvious we don't think much about the signage anymore. You can create one with artwork in minutes on Canva or similar platforms. This is great for those on a small budget. As the sole librarian on campus, I can also grant some exceptions. If there is only one student in the back room, I can let him or her play music without wearing headsets.

Signage is a good idea - but I find that most people totally ignore, or to be more generous, just don't see signs. It's important for them to be there so that you can refer patrons to them, but it takes consistent reinforcement from library staff to establish the ideal environment.

You can create quiet hubs designed as sort of an encased, glassed-in cubicle area. Portable ones are available for purchasing if the building design prevents enclosing spaces. Creating cozy reading nooks and corners, or placing chairs with attached tray tables in corners near shrlving are other ideas.

The key to adapting is to have flexible furniture and shelving if at all possible. Having floor shelving on wheels means that you can change your space. I've had an entire school production and audience in my library, as I was able to rearrange the shelves to accommodate it! It also means that you can try things to see what works, and amend as needed!
