Communicating your vision and goals is imperative to creating a positive environment. You have to live it every day. Communication is often only seen as verbal but this could be imagery around your team’s locker room or other places. Ensuring involvement of everyone in the process of achieving these goals also creates buy in! Don’t come up with it yourself! Allow the opportunity for feedback and fine tune it. Review it. As well as having the wider vision and goals make sure you have individual ones too! This might be through OKR’s or KPI’s. Make sure everyone is pushing and celebrate when they meet milestones. It’s important to create time to reflect on these every 12 weeks.

I believe that as a manager or coach, there are several key factors to creating a positive environment. 1. If you're working outside of your comfort zone, take the time to understand the place. 2. Earn respect and trust by building strong relationships with your players/colleagues. 3. Lead by example and demonstrate the behaviors you expect from others. 4. Celebrate successes and learn from mistakes together as a team. 7. Encourage teamwork and collaboration. 8. Foster open communication. 9. Create a positive and professional environment. 10. Set clear goals for everyone to work towards.

Si me baso en mi experiencia laboral, tanto en el cargo que ahora desempeño, como en mi trayectoria hasta llegar aquí, hay una base que tengo clara: si tu equipo de trabajo esta contento y satisfecho, los resultados llegan. Los objetivos como manager pueden abarcar diversos ámbitos, y no solo el del staff, pero algo que tengo claro es que si se tiene un conocimiento completo del ambiente de tu equipo, para poder ayudar a quien lo necesite, o adelantarse a posibles conflictos o eventualidades que rompan el buen clima, hay una mayor probabilidad que los otros objetivos se logren. Todo pasa por nuestro equipo de trabajo, sea de forma directa o indirecta. Trabajando la empatía y la responsabilidad laboral se creará un buen ambiente de equipo.

Un lider de equipo, sea este deportivo o de cualquier otra indole, tiene como principal responsabilidad generar la confianza en todos los integrantes que luego sentarán las base fundamental del desarrollo del grupo. Por ello el lider debe mostrarse autentico, genuino, integro, apegado a las reglas y sobretodo liderar desde el ejemplo. El lider debe ser capaz de trasmitir el direccionamiento y a diferencia de lo que muchos sostienen, en mi opinión no ha de convencer a nadie para que compre su visión. Sí debe comunicarla con toda claridad y hacer la invitación a las personas que quieran transitar el camino que el equipo se propondrá.

A good manager solicits feedback from the athletes on what they believe is achievable and aspirational before developing a vision and goals for the team. Before communicating your vision and goals for the team, it is important to identify the team leaders and cultivate early "buy-in" from them. The team, with their leaders as proxy, will be heard, and the leaders, as respected "primus inter pares" will be able to tactically reinforce that vision and those goals on the field, court, course, ice, water, etc. A good manager presents a vision and goals for the organization that the team can believe in, but is also aspirational.

Love this. I want my employees to feel engaged. If they had an idea that they wanted to bring to the table - it has to fit these parameters: it cannot cost our organization too much money, it has to be ethical, it cannot hurt the team's brand, and it cannot hurt the staff member's brand. As long as the idea fit those parameters, I said "yes". We made it work. Now the staff member also had to be on pace to hit their goals in order to carry out their idea, of course.

La confianza es la base deciamos. Un buen lider, siempre quiere seguir aprendiendo y por sobretodas las cosas se sabe ignorante para ser crudos con las palabras. "Solo se que no se nada, decía Sócrates". Por lo tanto un buen líder entiende que el aprendizaje contínuo es la fuente de su desarollo y crecimiento personal y con ello tambien el de su equipo. Por eso no hay mejor estrategia que formar un equipo que sea mejor que uno mismo en la mayor cantidad de aspectos posibles y una vez que me rodeo de los mejores, simplemente aprendo. Escuchar mucho mas que hablar. Toda la vida nos han dicho que tenemos dos oidos y una boca. El feedback es un regalo dicen en Silicon Valley. Siempre es mejor saber que no saber digo yo.

Wenn man als Coach in einem Teammeeting nur pro Forma eine Meinung einholt, diese dann aber gar nicht richtig wahrnimmt, dann merken die Teammitglieder schnell, dass es gar keinen Sinn macht, etwas zu sagen. So gelangt man schnell zu einer one-way Kommunikation und verliert die Aufmerksamkeit des Teams. Wenn die Athleten aber merken, dass ihre Inputs angehört werden und darüber wird, dann fühlen sie sich auch ernstgenommen. So steigt ihr Involvement und die Identifikation mit der Aufgabe - was zu besseren Leistungen führt.

Todo está relacionado con la cultura. Para fomentar la participación, se necesita labrar una seguridad psicológica dentro de la dinámica de trabajo que proteja al individuo a la hora de mostrar su personalidad y creatividad. ¿Qué es más importante el resultado o el proceso? ¿Esa eterna lucha entre el éxito a corto o largo plazo? Cómo líderes, es clave crear ese entorno donde los miembros de un equipo se sientan identificados con la cultura, tengan la libertad de intentarlo y esa retroalimentación necesaria para seguir aprendiendo y creciendo de los setbacks. Buenos líderes crean mejores equipos y, consecuentemente con el tiempo, mejores resultados.

Previamente hablaba de la necesidad de un buen ambiente para lograr el resto de objetivos. Es importante que, en la medida de lo posible, el staff sea conocedor del resto de objetivos: financieros, posicionamiento ante competencia, producto, etc. Ser participe de la toda la situación y el contexto, es ser participe tanto de los logros, como de la necesidad de mejora. El equipo debe saber que es el protagonista de las victorias, y sentir su parte de responsabilidad ante las derrotas. Con esto, tendremos un feedback mutuo, y más fuentes de ideas para seguir mejorando.

In my time as a regular soldier, I was responsible for a lot of people and my task was it, to create a unit, lead and educate them. For that, we use tools like praise and blame. That is similar to a team manager; the thing is, that you can only use such tools, if you know every single person. You have different kinds of people and if you use praise and blame or similar tools, you can do a lot of mistakes. For example, if you have a shy guy in your group, and he makes a mistake during a play, it is better to talk with him after the training or in a break, then blame him in front of the whole team. So, before you use any kind of praise and blame or similar tools, you have to become familiar with your team.

Wertschätzung ist nicht das gleiche wie Lob. Mit anderen Worten: man muss nicht immer loben, um Wertschätzung zu zeigen. Lobt man die ganze Zeit, kann man als Coach an Glaubwürdigkeit verlieren. Viel mehr zeigt beispielsweise konstruktive Kritik dem Teammitglied, dass man seine Leistungen schätzt und geben der Person ein positives Selbstwertgefühl. Auch ein kleiner Chat über alltägliches, oder über etwas, dass der Spieler vor Wochen erzählt hat, kann Gold wert sein. Alleine zu merken, dass man vom Trainer wahrgenommen wird, löst in den Spielern eine Steigerung des Selbstwertgefühls aus.

Creo que es necesario hilar este punto con el anterior. Cuando el staff se siente parte y participe de los logros, así como de los fallos, es más probable que aflore la motivación necesaria en el caso de necesidad de mejora. Así mismo, es esencial que el equipo sienta que su esfuerzo se ve recompensado. Esto, lo podemos realizar desde nuestra posición de diversas maneras, pero sin dejar de darle al concepto de "recompensa" la importancia que merece. El reconocimiento del esfuerzo no puede dejar de lado que el equipo tiene la obligación de realizar su trabajo. A partir de ahí, desde flexibilizar la toma de vacaciones, ayudarles en su jornada si se requiere, incentivos tangibles, etc., al equipo se le puede y debe valorar de diversas formas.

It can be easy as a manager of a team to see my role as a leader but the true task, in my opinion, is to be a servant to the team.

If you want to create a team and assign roles in that team, you need to have a goal for the team. That is the reason, why you need to become familiar and create a clear vision with your team. If you understand every single person and his personal ambitions, you´re able to create a team vision and then you have a tool to motivate every person and you´re able to assign the fitting roles. Only if the assigned roles are fitting, then you can increase the team work and performance.

Dicen que hay deportes colectivos e individuales. Pues aún los deportes individuales son deportes de equipo. Allí tenemos el ej de Rafa Nadal, de los mejores y mas laureados tenistas que nos ha dado la historia. Todos dicen que Rafa no hubiera sido Rafa si no hubiera sido por su tío y entrenador. Y junto con su tío probablemente un gran equipo. Juntos somos mas y mejores; y cuando desde la humildad entendemos que los demás son mejores que nosotros en muchas cosas y que también uno puede aportar desde su lugar; entonces resulta más sencillo incorporar el trabajo en equipo como un hábito, porque de esa forma siempre te sentirás incompleto si acaso no cuentas con tus colegas.

In my experience it is very important that all the team members will know their roles. Coach’s job is to coach, and the players is to play. When a teammate try’s to “coach” (tell him how to play) his teammate. most of the time it makes his teammate angry and frustrated, and it makes the player who wants to coach not being concerted on his game. Setting aside time for formal collaboration is really important, allows ideas to be generated, then allowing time for these ideas to be critically analyzed, will lead to a better product, or service! Then whilst this is occurring, informal discussions can take place and should be encouraged- this leads to people feeling valued, staff working harder as they feel part of the project. Win, win all round.

Entscheidend dabei ist eine positive Fehlerkultur. Wenn im Verein allen bewusst ist, dass sie Fehler machen dürfen und sollen, dann wagen sie viel eher neue Dinge aus und können so auch dazulernen. Wenn man hingegen nur versucht, Fehler zu vermeiden, werden nicht mal ansatzweise solche Fortschritte erzielt. Als Coach kann man das fördern, indem man im Training gewünschtes Verhalten lobt - auch wenn es mal schief geht. Auch klare Fehler dürfen ausdrücklich gelobt werden, weil es dem Team zeigt, dass das nichts schlimmes ist.

To support Learning and Development effectively, it is also necessary to know your team and every single person. Every person has a different kind of developing skills. That is the reason why good teams have a bunch of different training methods for teams. There is learning by doing, watching trainers, how to do something, reading, watching presentations, doing it as a team or in single sessions and so on. If you know your team and every single member, you're able to combine the best methods for the whole team and bring them much closer.

The clarity from interns to the CEO, in a flatter organisational structure, is through phases or series of learning and development cohorts and their application on field, latter being the focus. Ofcourse all of it takes time, but lets take a moment to applaud organisations which have a clearly defined learning and application based structure. Tanto para el alumnado en prácticas como para las incorporaciones en la plantilla, los managers somos los responsables de dar una formación sobre las tareas propias del trabajo lo suficientemente amplia como para que el desempeño del trabajador sea el adecuado. A partir de ahí, creo que es muy importante y positivo para todo el equipo, que se cree una red de apoyo entre compañeros, y sean ellos mismos los que se nutran del conocimiento por la experiencia adquirida. Esto les dará posicionamiento y reconocimiento en el staff y valía propia. A partir de ahí, toda formación complementaria, así como recursos de mejora para el desempeño del staff que podamos proporcionar, se verá como una recompensa a su esfuerzo y nos ayudará como equipo.

It is always very easy to say that you should think positively and be optimistic. But not everyone finds it easy to put this into practice. Positivity and optimism play a major role if you want to have a successful team. That's why it's so important for sports team managers to set a good example every day.

De nada sirve quedarse anclado en aquello que no paso y tampoco en lo que sabemos que no pasará. Debemos enfocarnos en lo que podemos controlar y de la mano de ello perseguir el futuro. Siempre pienso que hay dos tipos de personas en este mundo, aquellos que ven el vaso medio lleno y aquellos que ven el vaso medio vacío. Y mi aprendizaje me dice que quienes son capaces de ver el vaso medio lleno son capaces de enfocarse mucho mas y de ponerse en movimiento pero sobre todas las cosas siempre los veo mas felices.

Prioritise communication, foster a supportive environment, recognise individual and team achievements, promote a growth mindset and lead by example to instill optimism and resilience within the group. Most importantly do it as a team, you cannot instill a positive attitude and mindset and culture change without a buy in through collaboration.

It’s important as a manager in sports where results are volatile regardless of effort and investment sometimes. Keeping a positive attitude is a must for the team to success in the next challenge to come

The importance of a growth mindset should be emphasized, the manager or coach can highlight learning opportunities in both victories and defeats. Especially for young players, learning the concept of growth mindset at a very young age will really help them down the line in their careers. A good sports manager or coach should encourage a team culture that celebrates successes, no matter how small they are. When I work with young kids in sports, if they perform well in their sessions, I tend to treat them by playing their favourite game as a warmup in the next session. Even small words of encouragement sometimes would do. Finally, leading by example with a positive attitude in challenging situations will inspire your players.

En mi opinión no hay recetas rígidas de cómo formar un buen equipo o mantener una cultura de performance en un ambiente feliz para todos. Si pienso que debes conocer muy bien a las PERSONAS, las PERSONAS con la clave de todo. Debemos dedicar el tiempo a las PERSONAS. Muchas veces veo lideres de organizaciones tan enfocados en resolver los problemas "Duros" de la organización y no dedican nada de tiempo a sus equipos. Tenemos que darnos cuenta que las soluciones están en el EQUIPO y en las PERSONAS.
