How can healthcare managers effectively track their progress?

Healthcare Managers should have a broad understanding of the goals at Macro and micro levels. The well defined goals should have measurable elements to track the progress of the achievements. Meeting at regular intervals to track the progress is key to the success however be open to criticism to understand the deviations. Always have the fragmentation of the larger goals to make them look simple and achievable. Be the strength of the team, do the ground work, show the direction, track the progress, correct the mistakes and support the team to achieve the desired results in the stipulated time. Lastly, be responsible for your team and lead from the front. No Goal is big if the team is aligned with the right mindset.

In addition to internal SMART goals, benchmark your progress against industry-specific metrics and standards. This broader perspective provides context and allows you to gauge your innovation's relative success within the health landscape.

I like to say that you should consider developing SMARTER goals where E stands for evaluation and R stands for reflection. Try incorporating an iterative and regular process where you evaluate what’s working and not working as you make progress on your goals and adjust based on the feedback.

How can healthcare managers effectively track their progress? My thoughts that comes to mind are that Management can track their progress through employee engagement, productivity from employees and their ability to turn some of their followers into leaders as well. Employee engagement helps to address unknown issues and concerns, tracking productivity of employees helps to ensure as a leader you are initiating with clarity employees job responsibilities and turning followers into leaders shows that you have the number one concept down, and that is good leaders turn followers into another group of good leaders. To check your progress one needs to improve every minute of the day and keep improving and improving and set realistic goals and achieve them at your own pace and don't try to be too fast

I have reflected on this topic a lot recently. Although a lot of what I do in my job can be tracked via the setting of SMART goals, some things cannot - qualitative measures such as personal satisfaction in my life/role. This thought process has led me down the path of 'how to master the art of continuous improvement" - looking to get 1% better each day.

Be sure to understand the datasets that these dashboards and reports use. Acting as a translator between business or clinical personnel and the report writer is a critical skill to ensure the queries written are appropriately answering the question at hand. Validate the samples rigorously to ensure the data is accurate. Never stop asking questions to understand the data and what it is showing you.

A great way is to understand your objective and key results. It is an effective goal-setting and leadership tool for communicating what you want to accomplish and what milestones you'll need to meet in order to accomplish it. OKRs are used by some of the world's leading organizations to set and enact their strategies.

These suggestions fail to look at no financial metrics. These should be used to help provide perspective. One example of improper use of business management approach is to reduce the time spent in hospital without considering the effect on patients discharged early. Not only are the first few days in hospital the most expensive (early discharge increases the total cost by increasing the number of patients costing more) but may lead to an increase in the number of readmissions.

Utilizing dashboards and reports show KPIs and provide a quick overview. These tools allows you to monitor your achievments in specific objectives and enhancing your ability to make informed decisions.

Feedback from healthcare professionals and patients needs to be regularly obtained. A flow of feedback can be maintained as long as concrete action is visibly taken to address issues that have already been raised.

In my experience, it is easy to source (and subsequently be encouraged by) positive feedback. It is much harder to source negative/constructive feedback especially from people we work with on a daily basis. No one likes their weaknesses being identified, but it’s the only way by which we can hope to improve. I have used SurveyMonkey and Qualitrics before with success, but my preference has always been face-to-face conversion. I also encourage managers to complete a 360 review - if not annually, at least one time.

Seek feedback and be willing to adjust according to that. Don't take feedback personally. Have an open door policy. Use different platforms to obtain.

In my 40 years I’ve seen a decline in manager effectiveness, as seen by low productivity and high turnover, One way to track success is knowing the temperature of your surroundings, intervene expediently to avoid preventative problems, be in tune with staff constantly looking for feedback and how to improve. Effective management is collaborative at best

Whether it's weekly or annually, utilizing tools like checklists or Gantt charts keeps you on track and aligned with your objectives. This approach is particularly effective in ensuring adaptability and continuous improvement.

Healthcare managers can utilize committees to share and review their current goals and progress to gain additional insight on perspectives and the potential of different interventions to achieve their set goals.

Reviewing and revising actions, either assertive actions or not is essential in healthcare management. “To err is human” and here is one important pillar. Humans are inclined to miss or mistake actions and necessarily awareness must be priority. To review and revise is a good exit for a safer health environment.

In my experience, health care professionals should do frequent reviews and process optimisations to ensure operational excellence. Periodic assessments enable us to discover areas for improvement, streamline operations, and ensure operational efficiency.

Communicate progress on a regular basis. Far too often leaders share progress at wide intervals or only when the team is no longer tracking in the right direction. Share in multiple formats. The numbers are important... but so are visuals. Ensure that the visual is communicating what you intend to share. Tell stories. What is the impact of this effort? Who has been helped? How is the person doing the work benefitting? People want to know that their efforts are creating something positive. Make sure they know how their work is appreciated!

Following the same logic of “to err is human” humans must learn either their own mistakes. To share and communicate fails is much harder than otherwise, but it needs to be done with no criticism. Learning to avoid greater problems in the future, is the message.

There are two main ways to manage: centralise and control snd matrix management. The first leads to overblown and inefficient management. By employing competent staff and allowing them to manage along predetermined guidelines a better and less expensive outcome Is realised

One thing I have found helpful is working in interdisciplinary teams, which is also beneficial. In addition to bringing a variety of viewpoints to the table, fostering communication among healthcare professionals enhances our ability as a group to solve problems and advance cooperation.

Celebrate success. We often focus on how much further we have to go to reach our goal. That's important and can keep people moving in the right direction. Celebrating how much progress has been made is also incredibly important. Change isn't easy, particularly when there are so many things changing at once and when change is happening at an increasingly rapid pace. Research shows that individuals with experience in the area of the goal are motivated by the gap left to close. But novices are motivated by how far they have come. Share both!

The implementation of a quality program is healthcare management is essential. There are many out there focusing on different purposes but definitely all of those increase healthcare safety somehow.

SMART objectives with time bound deadlines. Delegate and each person delegated too has to spell out the timeline for the detailed sub objective tasks. If tasks are not achieved the reasons need to be documented so that those can be planned for or managed better .
