But above all, if I have to dial back the clock, I will focus on telling a story via data, essentially creating/visualizing an early funnel and really leaning into communication skill set along with the technical aspects, to understand how expert analysts have the gift to narrate the data story, and leaning into insights, to push the business forward. This to me comes with experience but I’d like interns to start early in their career to learn this specific skill set.

Datawarehousing as the word’s meaning is to warehouse the data in such a manner that the insights from data can get deciphered easily. So it is important that you understand data storage. Especially Relational databases, multiple levels of data normalisation, sqls, explain plan, data query optimisation etc Note that all this what are referring to here is structured data. Majority of the data that is present today is unstructured data. We will address this after you are thorough with the structured data storage and it’s fundamentals

One thing I’ve found helpful is learning on the job. Yes indeed the basics and the theory is important but hands on skills is the most important factor. Every business need is unique and if you get involved in different projects across different industries you will quickly climb up the ladder.

Seek mentors in your target industry rather than by technology. Hospitals with emergency departments have very different warehouse and analysis needs than those in commercial real estate. After learning data warehousing basics, syntax and performance and extended features are sometimes different among toolsets.
